LETTER S BOOKS TO TEACH THE LETTER U
Whether it be phonics, morals, or math, each of these books goes above and beyond teaching the letter U! Check out some of my favorites.

1.Thelma the Unicorn
Thelma dreams of being a glamorous unicorn. Then in a rare pink and glitter-filled moment of fate, Thelma’s wish comes true. She rises to instant international stardom, but at an unexpected cost. This joyful letter U book is about learning to love who you are…even if you don’t have sparkles.

2. Little Lost Unicorn
A tender story of friendship and bravery. When Little Unicorn gets lost in the woods, all the forest creatures comfort and welcome him. But while he’s playfully giving the smaller animals a ride, Baby Rabbit slips off his back and into the water—and he can’t swim. Will Little Unicorn be able to rescue the tiny bunny? And will he ever find his way back home again?

3. Underwear!
So begins the dialogue between a tired bear dad and a rambunctious bear cub who would rather play with his tidy-whities than get into bed. Underwear makes great hair. It can even turn one into a superber, or a goggle-wearing swimming bear. But beware of a big scare! Rhymes, homonyms, and conjunctions abound in this book that could be used to teach reading, but its primary purpose is to make bedtime fun.

4. Doctor Grundy’s Undies
A strong gust of wind sweeps Doctor Grundy’s best undies—brand-new, and decorated with tiger stripes and tiger eyes off the clothesline. The unusual undergarments go flapping out to sea and across many different lands. Who will get to keep them? A cracked crew of pirates? A silly Scottish bagpiper? You’ll find out in this fun-filled and irreverent world tour. The adventure is XXL, just like the fabulous undies, and loaded with clever rhymes and winsome pictures.

5. Up Above and Down Below
Up above, the ants are taking over a picnic. But down below is another story. Look closely and you’ll find very different worlds living side by side, at a picnic, in the ocean, in the blazing desert, even inside the same two-story home. This easy letter U book’s bold, wonderfully detailed illustrations hide lots of fun and mischief. Keep an eye out for the red ant and green worm who have snuck into every picture!

6. The Underwater Alphabet Book
Learn your ABCs in this aquatic exploration of the coral reef. A fun first concepts book that covers sea creatures from A to Z. From the well-known Angelfish to lesser known Humu humu nuku nuku apua’a all the way to Zebra Pipefish. Detailed and vibrant illustrations bring the reader into the colorful underwater world. This alphabetical journey is told both with wit and scientific accuracy that makes for a fun and funny read aloud that kids and parents will be eager to dive into.

It’s Opening Day at the White Horse Hotel. The staff of unicorns are all dressed in their smart new uniforms. They seem ready to greet Lord Stork, but these clumsy unicorns cause one disaster after another. Can anything persuade their very first guest to stay? Find out with your child in this adorable story.

8. Bob is a Unicorn
Though his friends don’t believe him, Bob is SURE he is a unicorn. This letter U book celebrates the importance of imagination, and believing in yourself.

9. Under the Ground
Take a journey down under the ground to discover the fascinating creatures that live in burrows, dens, tunnels and nests. Along with foxes, rabbits and ants, find out about burrowing birds, tunneling tarantulas, and strange blind rats that live underground too. My children love non-fiction books like this one.

10. Underpants For Ants
A humorously illustrated picture book for beginner readers – great fun to read aloud together. The ants are feeling a bit chilly – can Mouse help with her knitting skills? With simple rhyming text and phonic repetition specially designed to develop essential language and early reading skills. Also includes guidance notes for parents at the back of the book.
