LETTER R BOOKS TO TEACH THE LETTER R
Whether it be phonics, morals, or math, each of these books goes above and beyond teaching the letter R! Check out some of my favorites.
1. Never Let A Unicorn Meet A Reindeer!
Too funny, this book had my kids in a gigglefit! Put a unicorn and a reindeer together and let the games begin! Read this book to the kids at bedtime and you will spark their imagination. They will dream up all the shenanigans a reindeer and unicorn might get up to! I love the competitiveness between the unicorn and reindeer. The eventual result of this book is too cute.
2. Rot, the Cutest in the World!
A mutant potato learns that he’s pear-fect just the way he is in this bright, fun, and silly picture book. When Rot sees a sign for the “Cutest in the World Contest,” he can’t wait to enter.
3. Ricky, the Rock That Couldn’t Roll
The rocks get together to play and roll around their favorite hill. That’s when they find that one of their friends, Ricky, can’t roll with them. Unlike all of the others, Ricky can’t roll because he’s flat on one side. This is a truly adorable letter R book my kids loved.
4. Rusty Trusty Tractor
Micah’s grandfather is convinced that his rusty, trusty, fifty-year-old tractor will make it through another haying season. But Mr. Hill of Hill’s Tractor Sales is doing his best to sell him a brand-new tractor. He even wagers twenty jelly doughnuts that Grandpappy’s old tractor will break down. Will Grandpappy buy a new tractor to replace his faithful old friend?
5. The Little Red Pen
Poor Little Red Pen! She can’t possibly correct a mountain of homework all by herself. Who will help her? “Not I!” says Stapler. “Not I!” says Eraser. “¡Yo no!” says Pushpin, AKA Señorita Chincheta. But when the Little Red Pen tumbles in exhaustion into the Pit of No Return (the trash!), her fellow school supplies must get themselves out of the desk drawer and work together to rescue her. Trouble is, their plan depends on Tank, the rotund class hamster, who’s not inclined to cooperate. Will the Little Red Pen be lost forever?
6. Red Rubber Boot Day
This story follows all of the wonderful things to do on a rainy day. Your child will delight in the vivid illustrations and fun flow of the text! This letter R book is a great way to work on pronunciation with your little one.
7. I Know a Rhino
One lucky little girl has tea with a rhino, plays in the mud with a pig, blows bubbles in a bath with a giraffe, sings and dances with an orangutan. She gets to engage in other equally unusual and amusing antics with an assortment of animals. My kids loved all of the exciting descriptions.

8. Racoon On The Moon
A lively story with humorous illustrations, ideal for children who are beginning to read for themselves, or for reading aloud together. With simple rhyming text and phonic repetition, specially designed to develop essential language and early reading skills. Guidance notes for parents are included at the back of the book.
9. Red Red Red
A gentle book about dealing with emotions and calming toddler tantrums (and the grownup dealing with them!) together with an introduction to counting. The perfect letter R picture book for handling bad days and bad moods.
10. Room on Our Rock
There are two ways to read this story. When read from left to right, the seals believe there is definitely no room on their rock for others. When the book is read backward, the seals welcome others to shelter on their rock. A heartwarming story about sharing and compassion.
