LETTER K BOOKS TO TEACH THE LETTER K
Whether it be phonics, morals, or math, each of these books goes above and beyond teaching the letter K! Check out some of my favorites.
1. Kindergarten, Here I Come!
Get ready for school with these fun poems! This adorable picture book celebrates all the familiar kindergarten milestones and moments. Whether it’s the first-day-of-school jitters or the hundredth-day-of-school party, every aspect of the kindergarten experience is introduced with a light and funny poem–not to mention charming illustrations. Includes a sheet of stickers!
2. The Knight and the Dragon
Kn is a hard sound, even for some adults! This whimsical tale is a great way to introduce some of the tricky k sounds. Wonderful illustrations bring life to the journey of a curious young knight.
3. K Is for Kissing a Cool Kangaroo
This book technically goes through the whole alphabet! But that adorable kangaroo on the cover makes it a perfect letter k book! The brightly colored images on each page depict goofy scenes your child is sure to love.
4. Kite Flying
Kite Flying celebrates the Chinese tradition of kite making and kite flying. It lovingly depicts a family bonded by this ancient and modern pleasure. Join the family as they take a journey for supplies. And then, as they build the kite, together!
5. The King, the Mice and the Cheese
“This book is eternal. I read it to my children, and now I read it to my grandchildren. You have no idea how many thousands of times we turned those pages. I replaced my beat-up copy with a new clean printing for my 3 yr old granddaughter, and watched her mesmerized by the beautiful pages, the colors, and the gorgeous graphics. In no time she got the story and could read it along with me. Great book. Could not find a better introduction to the joy of reading for a toddler.” – Debby Lampert
6. Koala Lou
The inspirational and adorable story of young Lou has touched millions of hearts. These Australian Koalas help make the difficult subject of trying hard, and losing, easily understood by young children. The show of support by the mother Koala is a reminder that we will love our children, no matter what.
7. King Midas and the Golden Touch
The gorgeous and detailed artwork of this book captures the eye, and draws one into the story. Learning that a granted wish does not always equal happiness is a classic fable. [Some children may be bothered by the fact Midas accidentally turns his daughter into a golden statue.]
8. The Kissing Hand
School is starting in the forest, but Chester Raccoon does not want to go. To help ease Chester’s fears, Mrs. Raccoon shares a family secret called the Kissing Hand to give him the reassurance of her love any time his world feels a little scary. This book is widely used by kindergarten teachers on the first day of school. Stickers at the back will help children and their parents keep their Kissing Hand alive.
