LETTER L BOOKS TO TEACH THE LETTER L
Whether it be phonics, morals, or math, each of these books goes above and beyond teaching the letter L! Check out some of my favorites.
1. Llama Llama Trick or Treat
In Llama Llama Trick or Treat, little llama finds the perfect costume, picks out a pumpkin for a jack-o’-lantern, and then goes trick-or-treating with Mama and his friends! With short and simple rhyming text, the Llama Llama board books introduce Llama Llama to babies and toddlers before they’re ready for longer full-length stories. And their small size and durable pages are perfect for little hands.
2. Are You A Ladybug?
From egg, to winged beauty! This beautiful story book is a great educational resource beyond featuring the letter L. This book was especially helpful when my youngest was afraid of ladybugs, when she was 3!
3. Listening to My Body
Developing a language for sensations is so helpful when children are trying to express themselves. This engaging and interactive book practices experiencing and giving names to our feelings. And, beyond our feelings, the physical sensations that accompany them. A free activity guide can be found on the author’s website!

4. Lights-Out, Leonard
Leonard doesn’t like bedtime, especially when there’s a five-nosed, seven-tailed, eleven-handed, scaly-waily monster hiding in the corner of his bedroom. It seems like Leonard (and his parents) will never sleep again… until he discovers a mysterious book called How to Frighten Monsters.
5. Little Bear Needs Glasses
Little Bear can’t see very clearly, and his friends are worried! His friends let him borrow their glasses. None of their frames fit quite right. Everything is still blurry. Turns out, he needs glasses of his very own! Little readers will love helping Little Bear pick out the pair that are “just right” for him using the 5 re-position-able, reusable stickers.
6. Little Red Riding Hood
Not only is this book beautifully illustrated, it comes with cute masks! That is a sure fire way to get my kids interested!

7. Love You Hoo
Little Owl and Big Owl are cuddled up at bedtime. Big Owl reminds Little Owl about all the special times they’ve had together and all the exciting adventures the future holds. It is a joyous, call-it-from-the-treetops rhyming salute to the love between a caregiver and child. Love You Hoo and Big Owl give voice to what every child deserves to know: that they are, and always will be, loved; that life is a journey; that there will be good times and bad, but that their Big Owl will always, “Love you Hoo.”
8. Luna Loves Library Day
Though her parents live apart, they both love Luna so much! As excited as Luna is to see her dad, each week, she is most excited to go to the library! Big books and little, adventures await Luna and her father!

9. Lizard In A Blizzard
A cloud is blocking the sun and Lizard is determined to move it… But lizards are not wizards whatever Lizard thinks! This fun rhyming story, specially written to develop phonemic awareness, has wonderful illustrations by David Semple. The book is ideal both for reading aloud and for children who are beginning to read for themselves.
10. Llamas In Pajamas
Adorable and goofy, this is a family favorite. I can’t get over how cute each of the llamas are in their pajamas! This letter L book made rhyming fun and easy! My kids were very quickly able to read it on their own.
