- The moose, known as elk in Europe, is the only species in the species Alces alces.
- Moose are found in North America or Northern Europe, most found in the United States and Canada.
- The name “moose” is borrowed from the Algonquin word “moosu”, meaning “bark stripper”.
- Moose is the largest and heaviest deer species out of 43 species.
- A male adult moose is called a bull, a mature female moose a cow, and an immature moose of either sex a calf.
- Moose are excellent swimmers: They can swim six miles per hour. Most humans can only swim two miles per hour.
- Young calves don’t start to grow their antlers until their first year of life.
- A healthy adult moose can eat 40-60 pounds of food daily.
- The moose population is estimated to be about 1.5 million worldwide.
- Moose can move each ear and each eye independently.
