Gorilla Facts FOR KIDS

  1. Gorillas are large primates and are the largest living members of the primate family.
  2. They are native to the forests of central and eastern Africa.
  3. There are two family groups of gorillas: the Eastern gorilla (Gorilla beringei) and the Western gorilla (Gorilla gorilla). Each is divided into other gorilla subspecies. 
  4. Mountain gorillas are a subspecies of the Eastern gorillas and are endangered – there are an estimated 1,063 in the wild according to studies done in recent years.
  5. Gorillas face significant challenges and population declines due to habitat destruction and loss, primarily caused by human activities such as deforestation, agriculture, and logging.

  1. Gorillas share similarities with humans in terms of behavior and social structures, which has contributed to their study as a means of understanding human experience and evolution.
  2. There are two known gorillas, Koko and Michael, who have used American Sign Language to communicate.
  3. We share about 98% of our DNA with gorillas, which means they can get human diseases like a cold.
  4. Adult males can reach impressive sizes, standing up to 5.6 feet tall and weighing around 400-500 pounds.
  5. Gorillas play a vital role in their ecosystems as seed dispersers, promoting forest regeneration and conservation of nature.
