  • Giraffes are the tallest mammals on Earth. 
  • The natural habitat of giraffes is North and West Africa, including the Sahara, but nowadays they are only found in sub-Sarahan Africa.
  • Giraffes can run as fast as 35 miles an hour for short distances, or 10mph for long ones.
  • Giraffe tongues are between 45 and 50 cm long.
  • Giraffes only need to drink water once every few days, they usually get their water from the plants they eat.
  • A giraffe calf can stand up and walk an hour after being born. 
  • The spot pattern on each giraffe is unique, they’re like human fingerprints.
  • Giraffes only eat plants, especially leaves from the acacia tree. 
  • Giraffes use their long tongues (up to 21in) to pull down leaves from the trees.
  • Giraffes spend most of their time eating, they usually eat 45kg of leaves and twigs a day.
