Blobfish Facts FOR KIDS

The blobfish, scientific name Psychrolutes marcidus, is a fish with a smooth head and large mouth known as the world’s ugliest animal by public vote.
It lives in the deep water off the coasts of mainland Australia, and Tasmania, as well as the waters of New Zealand.
The blobfish grows about 12 inches long.
Blobfish’s natural environment is actually in the dark, cold habitats at the bottom of the sea, between 1970 and 3940 feet deep.
These sea creatures sit at the bottom of the ocean floor and eat anything that passes by, such as crustaceans, brittle stars, anemones, and carrion.

The female blobfish lay up to 100,00 eggs in a single nest and hover over them to protect them from predators.
The blobfish looks more “normal” underwater, but at the surface, they get the appearance we know.
Most of its body mass is gelatinous, and it doesn’t have a full skeleton.
Sadly, the blobfish is an endangered species because of overfishing and deep-sea trawling.
Unlike many other fish species, the blobfish doesn’t have scales; instead, they have flabby skin.
