Blobfish Facts FOR KIDS
- The blobfish, scientific name Psychrolutes marcidus, is a fish with a smooth head and large mouth known as the world’s ugliest animal by public vote.
- It lives in the deep water off the coasts of mainland Australia, and Tasmania, as well as the waters of New Zealand.
- The blobfish grows about 12 inches long.
- Blobfish’s natural environment is actually in the dark, cold habitats at the bottom of the sea, between 1970 and 3940 feet deep.
- These sea creatures sit at the bottom of the ocean floor and eat anything that passes by, such as crustaceans, brittle stars, anemones, and carrion.
- The female blobfish lay up to 100,00 eggs in a single nest and hover over them to protect them from predators.
- The blobfish looks more “normal” underwater, but at the surface, they get the appearance we know.
- Most of its body mass is gelatinous, and it doesn’t have a full skeleton.
- Sadly, the blobfish is an endangered species because of overfishing and deep-sea trawling.
- Unlike many other fish species, the blobfish doesn’t have scales; instead, they have flabby skin.
