Healthy Drink Ideas
Water, water & more water
Obviously, let's start with water. Water is one of the few things that is completely uncontroversially accepted by all experts. Scroll below to find some ways to make water more appealing for kids. Here are some of our favorite ways to flavor water:
- Citrus flavored water: Add orange, lime, grapefruit or lemon slices to water. Store in fridge to allow the yummy flavors to infuse.
- Strawberries and kiwi
- Berries, berries and more berries!
- And make your own combination!
Something that has gained popularity in the US over the last few years making it much easier to find in the stores vs. having to crack open a coconut, is coconut water. Science shows that it is a very hydrating drink and people like me just like the taste.
There are lots of ways to make tea that aren't filled with sweeteners or sugar. Whether it is traditional hot tea or the Southern favorite, ice tea, watch the ingredients and make it at home so you can control it.
A juicer is an easy way to introduce vegetable juices into your kids diet. I was surprised at how easy it was to get them involved in the juicing process and invested in drinking the results. I would throw in a fruit or two in each vegetable juice "trial" for sweetness. Apples work really good to enhance sweetness and not take over or fight with the flavor.
The juicer I use and love is this one (affiliate): Breville Big Squeeze Slow Juicer - the reason I really love it is because it is easy to clean which is a big problem with some of the other popular juicers.
Whether it be regular cow's milk or a plant-based alternative, milk can be a healthy part of your child's diet. As with anything, make sure the amount consumed is in proportion to other foods.
And skip the sugar like adding chocolate, strawberry or other syrupy milk additives.
