Today we’re doing pie crafts! Fall just screams pies to me. Pumpkin pie, pecan pie, apple pie, you name it! And we will be making our own pie using clay, paint, and glitter. Kids of all ages will love making their very own pies. This pie craft not only lets you be creative, but promotes pretend play. You can make these clay pies at home or in the classroom.

Fall Pie Crafts

These cute little pies are fun to make! They’re festive and they look delicious! All you need is some clay, paint, glue, and glitter! Not only are they fun to make, but this pie craft is great for promoting pretend play, and it can be used as décor.

This play food is so cool. Not only does it look realistic, but it can be used with other play food as well. Neat, huh? So, without further ado, let’s make some fun fall pie crafts!

Supplies Needed To Make This Fun Pie Craft

• Air Dry Clay
• Clay Tools
• Paint
• Paintbrushes
• Elmer’s Glue
• Glitter

How To Make A Clay Pumpkin Pie

Step 1

Roll your clay into a large ball.

Step 2

Flatten your ball and make a smooth circular disc.

Step 3

Pinch out the edge of your disc and begin scrunching it.

It should be a wave almost. You can use your fingers or tools.

Step 4

Roll out a small ball and pinch it to make a cone and twist.

Step 5

Place it in the middle of the pie and smooth down the edges with your tools. Allow your pie to dry overnight.

Step 6

Paint your crust a tan or “golden brown.”

Step 7

Paint the pie filling orange. We mixed a little brown into ours to look like spices were added. Paint the whipped cream white. And you’re finished.

How To Make A Clay Apple Pie

Step 1

Roll your clay into a large ball.

Step 2

Flatten your ball and make a smooth circular disc.

Step 3

Roll a new ball out and flatten it to a thin slab and cut slices.

Step 4

Take your slices and weave it onto the pie. We made the mistake and putting the slices down first. May wanna weave as you go to avoid sticking. Weave it over under, over under.

Step 5

Cut off the excess strips. Take a fork and pinch the ends and to add texture. Allow your pie to dry.

Step 6

We painted the “filling” red with a little black mixed in to make a deeper red. The tan or “golden brown” color we used for the lattice and the crust.

Step 7

Once the paint is tried brush your pie with a little Elmer’s glue and sprinkle on the glitter to look like “sugar”. And you’re done!

How To Make This Pie Craft Your Own

This pie craft is so simple and fun, but you can make it your own. Change things up to make your pies even more unique like:

• Changing up the pie “flavors”. Make a chocolate cream pie, key lime pie, cherry etc.
• Make tiny pecans to add to a plain pie to make a pecan pie.
• Change up your lattice or crust with a fun design.
• Add a little essential oil to your clay to make a scented pie.
• Make little pie tins and paint them silver for a metallic color.
• Create bigger pies or little pies.
• Cut out pie slices from your pies and place them on small paper plates.
• Use a cotton ball as whipped cream instead of clay. You can add a cotton ball to each slice or to the whole pie.
• Make savory pies like a pot pie with potatoes, bacon, chicken, etc. Or a vegan pie with veggies.
• You can make a thin crust or a thick crust for your pies.
• You could go another direction and make your own pizza pie with “fresh mozzarella” and other “fresh ingredients”.

Our Experience With This Fun and Festive Pie Craft

We love Thanksgiving and fall. Mainly because we love the food. And pies count in that category! We love pecan pies, pumpkin pies, apple pies, they’re just so festive. And while we like making the sweet treats for real, this is a fun alternative.

My kids had an absolute blast making their own pies. Not only was it great gross motor skills practice for them, but they were also able to make themselves some pretend food which promoted pretend play. And I think that is just so important. Plus, I was able to use mine as fun fall décor. It’s a win-win for everything in the end.

I really want to try my hand at making a pecan clay pie, and my oldest wanted to make a chocolate cream pie with lots of dollops of whipped cream. So needless to say, we will be doing this pie craft again soon. But we hope you and yours had as much fun as we did with this super fun pie craft.
