In case you didn’t know, Costco requires you to have your own membership card to shop in their warehouse stores.

Apparently, not everyone knows this because Costco is having to crack down and remind people that using another person’s membership is not okay.

Turns out, shoppers are using membership cards that don’t belong to them at self-checkout lanes.

In a recent interview, Costco told The Dallas Morning News that their warehouses are going to start asking to see a shopper’s membership card along with a photo at the self-service registers.

We don’t feel it’s right that nonmembers receive the same benefits and pricing as our members,” Costco told the newspaper via email.

Honestly, it makes sense.

I pay for my membership and if people are just getting the same deals I am without having to pay, that isn’t fair.

Now, I get not everyone can afford a $60 membership. However, Costco does allow current members to have one additional card that can be used by someone else within the same household.

They also allow each Costco member to bring 2 guests with them but the Costco member has to make the purchase.

And in case you really want to shop alone without having a membership, ask a friend or family member to purchase you a Costco gift card (shop card) and you can shop using that.

Bottom line is – you need a Costco membership to shop there and the days of people using memberships that don’t belong to them, are over.
