Komodo dragon facts FOR KIDS

Komodo dragons, also known as the Komodo monitor lizards, are giant lizards and a member of the monitor lizard family Varanidae.
They can only be found in the Indonesian islands of Komodo.
Komodo dragons are not dragons.
These wild dragons typically weigh about 154 pounds, but the largest verified specimen reached a length of 10.3 feet and weighed 366 pounds. Female Komodo dragons tend to be smaller than males.
Young Komodo dragons mostly feed on insects, small lizards, and other small animals, while larger dragons can take down prey as big as water buffalo and wild boars.

Besides water buffalo and wild boars, the Komodo dragon is known to prey on other large animals, such as deer and even other Komodo dragons.
The Komodo dragon has sharp teeth, flat heads, and sharp claws, which it uses to tear apart its prey.
The number of Komodo dragons is declining. There are only around 5,700 Komodo dragons left in the wild, making them endangered species.
They can eat up to 80% of its body weight in one meal.
Komodo dragons can swim pretty far and and run as fast as 12 miles per hour.
