Interesting facts about the Aztec civilization
- The Aztecs were one of the Mesoamerican civilizations that flourished from the 14th to the early 16th century in southern Mexico.
- They were one of the last Native American civilizations before the Spanish conquistadors arrived in the 16th Century.
- An Aztec legend inspired the Mexican flag: they believed that they should build the Aztec capital city where they saw an eagle perched on a nopal cactus eating a snake, which can be seen in the center of the flag.
- The capital of the Aztec empire was Tenochtitlán, modern-day Mexico City, in the middle of Lake Texcoco. It was one of the world’s largest cities from that time.
- They invented the chinampas agricultural system, which were floating artificial islands used to grow crops on wetlands or lakes.
- The Great Temple, “Templo Mayor” in Spanish, honored Huitzilopochtli, the god of war, and Tlaloc, the god of rain and agriculture.
- They invented chocolate! The Aztecs used cacao beans to create the first version of what we know as chocolate.
- Aztec people spoke Nahuatl language, where words like “chocolate”, “chili” and “aguacate” (avocado) come from.
- The name Aztec means “people from Aztlan”, the mythical place of origin in northern Mexico.
- One of the most important Aztec gods was Quetzalcoatl, a feathered serpent, the deity that created mankind.
- The Aztecs were the first people to celebrate Day of the Dead.
- Social class was composed of eight different social classes: rulers, warriors, nobility, priests and priestesses, free poor, slaves, servants, and the middle class.
