Exciting news for science fans of all ages, from the smallest kids to the grown-ups! The Perseverance Rover is planned to launch and get to Mars this summer!

Mars Mission 2020
Over the years, NASA has sent different rovers and orbiters to the Red Planet to learn everything we can about it.

Whether you are looking for science experiments for kids or easy stem activities, following the Perseverance Rover’s journey to the red planet will nurture kid’s curiosity and awake an early interest in science.

We are solving your kid’s (and even yours!) biggest questions right now. Plus, we have the coolest printables for you. Get ready!

Why are Rovers so important?

Over the years, NASA has sent four robotic vehicles, called rovers, to Mars. The four rovers that have already gone to Mars are Sojourner, Spirit and Opportunity, and Curiosity. The Perseverance rover will become a part of them soon!

Scientists have been sending spacecraft to Mars since the 1970s, and all of them have different specialties: for example, one type called “orbiters” take pictures as they zoom around the red planet. Another type is the landers, which provide photos and information from their landing spots on the surface of Mars.

Kids have a natural interest in discovering and exploring the world, and it’s our job to encourage them to learn more. The Mars 2020 Mission is a great way to stimulate their curiosity.

When is the Mars 2020 Mission Perseverance Rover Launching?

The Mars 2020 team is working hard to get the Perseverance rover to the launch pad this summer. The launch period is approximately three weeks, (from July 30 to August 15), and the daily launch windows will last approximately two hours.

The first launch opportunity begins at
4:50 a.m. PDT/ 7:50 a.m. EDT on July 30

The Mars 2020 spacecraft with its Perseverance Rover will launch from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida.

What will the NASA’s Perseverance Rover do?

Kids, get ready because this summer the Mars 2020 spacecraft with its Perseverance Rover will launch on an Atlas V-541 rocket from Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida.

The Perseverance Rover has very specific and important goals:

  • searching for signs of ancient microbial life
  • understanding and characterizing the planet’s geology and climate
  • collecting rock and sediment samples
and most importantly… Paving the way for human exploration on Mars!

The Perseverance Rover is landing on one of Mars’ craters, the Jezero Crater! And thanks to the 23 cameras featured on the Perseverance Rover, we will get a high-definition view of the landing!

Unlike the Curiosity Rover, that has been on Mars for over 7 years, Perseverance has “ears”, which are two microphones, to capture the first sounds of a Mars landing and Martian wind!

What is the Atlas V?

The Atlas V is a launch vehicle that provides the velocity needed by a spacecraft to escape Earth’s gravity and set it on its course for Mars.

The cool thing about the Atlas V is that it’s one of the largest rockets available for interplanetary flight – that means travel between planets!   The launch vehicle is provided by United Launch Alliance, Centennial Colorado.

Mars’ Perseverance Rover Printables
