Today we are doing a simple, but fun, watermelon craft. Kids of all ages will have fun making these pretend play watermelon slices out of paper. You just need a few craft supplies. This paper craft is great for older children and younger children alike. Make this watermelon craft at home or in the classroom.

Watermelon Craft

The weather is hot and that means watermelon! Even if it’s not real watermelon it’s fun to pretend with this fun paper craft. All you need is a couple budget-friendly art supplies to make it too!

Crafts that promote pretend play is the best. And this pretend play food is a great way to engage kids and get their imagination going. So, it’s both! Which is awesome I think. So, without further ado, let’s make paper some watermelon slices!

Supplies Needed To Make This Watermelon Craft

• Construction Paper (White and Red)
• Scissors
• Glue Stick
• Green Marker
• Black or Brown Marker
• Ruler

How To Make This Paper Watermelon Craft

Step 1

Fold a white piece of paper in half.

Step 2

Trace a half circle on the paper. Cut the half circle out. You should be left with an oval.

Step 3

Use the leftover white paper as a stencil. Trace around it about halfway down and use the ruler to make a straight line. Cut it out.

Step 4

Cut off about 1/4-1/2 inch off the edge of the red paper.

Step 5

Glue it to 1/2 of the white oval.

Step 6

Color the rind green, leave a little white between the red and green.

Step 7

Add seeds by making small teardrops.

Step 8

Fold the white half of the oval behind the watermelon half. Fold the colored half in half to make a triangle.

Step 9

Glue the open side shut.

Step 10

Gentle add creases to flatten the rounded side. You’re done!

How To Make This Paper Craft Your Own

Just like all our other crafts you can make this watermelon craft your own. You can do things like:

• Use green paper and layer white and red paper for the rind.
• Add details to the rind.
• Color the red part in with paint or markers.
• Use glitter.
• Use stickers or washi tape.
• Use double sided tape instead of glue.

Our Experience With This Watermelon Craft

We love watermelon in our house. Every summer we like to pick some up at a local farm and they’re so good! We eat them as is, with salt, sometimes with chamoy and tajin. It’s all good.

But my kids are super into play food right now. And we have a ton of it. However, we don’t have everything. And I was like…why not make some. Now is this as sturdy as plastic food, obviously not. But it’s a fun craft that can be used after.
