Past Day of the Dead Barbie Dolls
This is the 4th year Mattel has released a dia de muertos doll. In 2022, Mattel released a beautiful doll dressed in a ruffled dress with rich royal purple and pigment-print skeletons, as well as calavera sugar skulls and flower details.
In 2021, they released a gorgeous Barbie doll in a traditional dress embroidered with sugar skull and flower details. A crown of marigolds with hidden skull details adorns her hair, complemented by a twisted headband detail.
When designing the 2020 Barbie, Javier Meabe said he was inspired by his own family’s traditions and his own creative voice when he designed the doll, using bright colors and vivid textures from the culture.
As for the first Barbie in this series, Day of the Dead Barbie 2019 wore a stunning floor-length black dress embroidered with flowers, skulls, and butterflies in colorful patterns. Barbie’s face is decorated as a skull, or calavera, created with face paint, which represents the dead.
More About the Día de Muertos Celebration
The Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos in Spanish, is a Mexican holiday celebrated on the first two days of November that honors the lives of those who have passed away: family members, friends, celebrities, and even pets. It is a beautiful and culturally rich celebration that holds a special place in the hearts of Mexicans and people of Mexican descent around the world. Día de Muertos traditions include parades, music, dance, and traditional foods like pan de muerto (bread of the dead) and sugar skull candies, all very common in Mexican culture. In these Barbie dolls, you can see a lot of inspiration from these elements!
