As a new homeschooling family, I have been looking for different ways to introduce my kids to holidays from all over the world. That’s one reason why I’m excited for the newest Dia De Muertos Barbie, which Mattel announced earlier this week.

The new Barbie is only the second doll in the collection, and while it is considered an “adult collectible,” I think it’s also a great way to teach my kids about the Mexican holiday and Day of the Dead traditions.

Dia De Muertos is celebrated on November 1st, and it’s a day when families celebrate and remember loved ones who have died. The celebrations include parades, big meals, as well as beautiful, decorated altars. The Dia de Muertos Barbie recognizes some of those traditions with its bright colors and stunning Calavera face design.

What makes this collectible Barbie even more special? It was designed by a Mexican-American artist and designer, Javier Meabe. As he shared in a statement, he was inspired by his own family’s traditions when he designed the doll:

It was very important that the second Dia de Muertos doll felt just as special as the first in the Barbie series. As a Mexican American designer, it was important to me to use my creative voice to design a doll that celebrates the bright colors and vivid textures of my culture, as well as have the traditions I grew up with represented and celebrated in Barbie.”

He also drew some of his inspiration from the color gold, which is often used in Mexican culture, statues, jewelry, buildings, and more. The result: an absolutely stunning Barbie that truly honors the special holiday.

The second collectible Dia de Muertos doll is available through Target for $75. While it keeps selling out, when it is out of stock you can be notified when it’s back. I’m not surprised that it keeps selling out!

The details on this special 2020 Dia de Muertos Barbie doll are absolutely exquisite and totally worth the price tag.
