After many attempts to negotiate an end to Apartheid (A system of racial exclusion led by South Africa’s National Party), Nelson Mandela and the ANC eventually embarked on an armed struggle to free non-white people from the country’s oppressive laws. Nelson Mandela Facts FOR KIDS

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid activist and politician.
He served as president from 1994 to 1999. He was the first black president of South Africa and also the first president of the country in general.
His birth name was Rolihlahla. In his Xhosa tribe, the name means “pulling the branch of a tree”.
His teacher gave him the name “Nelson” on his first day of elementary school. African children were given English names that were easier to pronounce.
In 1962, Mandela received military training from the Algerian National Liberation Front.

In 1963, he and 7 other activists were sentenced to life imprisonment for conspiring to overthrow the government, most of the time served on Robben Island, until he was released on 11 February 1990.
Mandela received more than 260 awards over 40 years, most notably the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.
Nelson Mandela celebrated his 80th birthday by marrying Graça Machel on 18 July 1998.
He did not like violence, but he loved watching boxing and studying the science behind it.
In August 1952, he and Oliver Tambo established South Africa’s first black-owned law firm in the 1950s, Mandela & Tambo.
