After many attempts to negotiate an end to Apartheid (A system of racial exclusion led by South Africa’s National Party), Nelson Mandela and the ANC eventually embarked on an armed struggle to free non-white people from the country’s oppressive laws. After that, he was imprisoned at both Pollsmoor Prison and Victor Verster Prison. Upon his release, he spearheaded the fight and defeat of Apartheid and became a global icon and inspiration across the world!

  1. Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid activist and politician.
  2. He served as president from 1994 to 1999. He was the first black president of South Africa and also the first president of the country in general.
  3. His birth name was Rolihlahla. In his Xhosa tribe, the name means “pulling the branch of a tree”.
  4. His teacher gave him the name “Nelson” on his first day of elementary school. African children were given English names that were easier to pronounce.
  5. In 1962, Mandela received military training from the Algerian National Liberation Front.

  1. In 1963, he and 7 other activists were sentenced to life imprisonment for conspiring to overthrow the government, most of the time served on Robben Island, until he was released on 11 February 1990.
