- Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid activist and politician.
- He served as president from 1994 to 1999. He was the first black president of South Africa and also the first president of the country in general.
- His birth name was Rolihlahla. In his Xhosa tribe, the name means “pulling the branch of a tree”.
- His teacher gave him the name “Nelson” on his first day of elementary school. African children were given English names that were easier to pronounce.
- In 1962, Mandela received military training from the Algerian National Liberation Front.
- In 1963, he and 7 other activists were sentenced to life imprisonment for conspiring to overthrow the government, most of the time served on Robben Island, until he was released on 11 February 1990.
- Mandela received more than 260 awards over 40 years, most notably the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.
- Nelson Mandela celebrated his 80th birthday by marrying Graça Machel on 18 July 1998.
- He did not like violence, but he loved watching boxing and studying the science behind it.
- In August 1952, he and Oliver Tambo established South Africa’s first black-owned law firm in the 1950s, Mandela & Tambo.
