How to make a mermaid paper bag puppet

We are going to use lots of scrap craft supplies including yarn, ribbon, and paper and glue it to a brown paper bag to make this mermaid craft.

Supplies needed to make a mermaid paper bag puppet

You will need a brown paper bag, googly eyes, yarn, and scrap paper to make a mermaid puppet.

Instructions for making a mermaid paper bag puppet

Step 1

Step 1 for your mermaid paper bag puppet is to add googly eyes, pink, cheeks, a pom pom nose, and a mouth to your brown paper bag.
Add facial features to the folded section of your paper bag.

Add the facial features for your mermaid to the section of the paper bag that is folded over. Use glue to attach googly eyes and a pom pom nose, and then cut out pink cheeks. You can also use a marker to add your mermaid’s mouth. I actually forgot to do this until the very end.

Step 2

Step 2 for your mermaid paper bag puppet is to cut out circles from blue, aqua, and purple paper and glue them on in a pattern to the paper bag.
Cut out purple, aqua, and blue circles and attach them in a pattern to the paper bag.

Use a circle cutter or scissors to cut out circles from blue, purple, and aqua paper. Glue them into place in a patter across the bottom of the brown paper bag.

Step 3

Step 3 for making your mermaid puppet is to cut out shells for your mermaid's top, and then decorate the shells and tail with glitter glue.

Sketch a shell shape onto a piece of paper and then use that as a template to create two identical shells for your mermaid. Glue them on and then decorate them, along with the tail with glitter glue.

Step 4

Step 4 for your mermaid puppet is to add hair by tying yarn together with ribbon, and then gluing it into place.
Add hair to your mermaid with yarn and ribbon.

The final step for your mermaid is to give her hair. Cut lengths of yarn, tie them together with ribbon, and then glue the top section into place.

  • Brown paper bag
  • Scrap paper - assorted colors such as purple, blue, green, or pink
  • Yarn - any color, and any thickness
  • Ribbon - any scrap pieces of ribbon will work
  • Googly eyes
  • Small pom poms
  • Glitter glue
  • Glue stick
  • Marker

  • Circle punch
  • Scissors

Instructions

  1. Attach the googly eyes and pom pom (nose) to your paper bag with the glue.
  2. Cut out circles for the cheeks, and for the mermaid tail, and glue those into place too.
  3. Use a red marker to draw on your mermaid's mouth.
  4. Sketch a seashell onto paper and use that as a template to make 2 identical shells for your mermaid's top. Glue those on too.
  5. Decorate the shells and the tail with glitter glue to make them sparkle.
  6. Cut lengths of yarn, tie them together with ribbon, and glue them across the top of the bag with glue.
