School-aged kids will practice drawing cartoon style hands and feet using basic shapes for beginning sketches. We’ve included a free printable to make this project easy to use at home or in the classroom.
Using Shapes to Begin Our Sketch
This project shows kids how to turn basic shapes into various cartoon hands and feet. I find that by starting with odd shapes, kids are less likely to feel the pressure of not knowing where to begin drawing, proportions, and so on.

Directions to Drawing Cartoon Hands and Feet
Step 1
Begin by drawing various shapes onto the page. These shapes will represent the palm of the hand.
Step 2
Use either your non-dominate hand, or the printable reference, to determine finger placement. Add an area onto each shape to represent total finger area.
Step 3
Then, add guidelines for each finger placement.
Step 4
Continue sketch by adding details. Remember that we are not looking for perfection in proportion and details. These are cartoon hands so feel free to exaggerate features in any way!
Step 5
Then, use a permanent marker to outline the final sketch and erase unwanted pencil lines.
Step 6
Draw pairs of shapes (I prefer circles) to begin feet sketches. Shapes are representative of heel and ball placement on the foot.
Step 7
Just as we did with the hands, create guidelines for toes. Also add lines to create more of a foot shape by connecting both the heel and ball shapes.
Step 8
Continue to add sketches to create final foot sketch.
Step 9
Next, use a permanent marker to outline the final sketches and then erase unwanted pencil lines.
Step 10
Finally, color and complete sketches.
