This printable craft is great for big kids and little kids alike and broadens their knowledge on different places around the world as well as different festivals and religions. What Is A Paper Diya?

A diya is a lamp that uses oil and is typically made from clay. It’s often used in South Asian cultural and religious traditions. Especially during certain festivals like Diwali. Diwali is a Hindu festival of lights that is help in October to November. It’s associated with one of their goddesses and also marks the beginning of India’s fiscal year. There are variants of the festival of lights which is celebrated by other groups of people like: some Buddists, Jains, and Sikhs.

Supplies Needed To Make A Paper Diya

How To Make A Paper Diya

Step 1

Download and print our diya template.

Step 2

Paper diya craft- lamp bowls and flames to cut out- kids activities blog
Cut out any color lamp bowl and flame!

Cut out the diya and the flame.

Step 3

Fold this like you would a fan.

Take one of the pattern pages and fold it like you would a paper fan. Each fold should be about 1/2 inches wide.

Step 4

Take your fan folded strip and fold it in half so that the short end is now touching the other end.

Step 5

Apply glue to the inner folds at the center crease. This will secure the fan shape.

Step 6

Glue the diya bowl in the middle of the folded fan.

Step 7

Lastly, glue the flame on the back side of your diya bowl so it looks like it’s in the center.

Your diya is complete!
