Costco is the place to go when you want to buy in bulk but also walk out with a full meal ready to go for your family.

Most turn to the $4.99 Costco Rotisserie Chicken because it’s tasty and inexpensive. Plus, it’s fully cooked.

Side note: did you know that Costco ring’s a bell when the chicken is just put out?

But recently, customers are saying that Costco’s rotisserie chicken tastes like soap or has a ‘chemical flavor’ and it never used to taste that way.

I’ll be the first to admit, I haven’t had one of these Costco chicken’s in years. I read they have a ton of sodium so I tend to stay away.

And now, I have one more to reason to stay away from them.

Reddit users u/MillennialModernMan posted a question on the r/Costco subreddit.

In the post, titled “What’s up with the rotisserie chicken lately?,” the Redditor says the product tastes different than usual and wonders if anyone has answers.

And the replies were a bit off putting. Many replied saying they had noticed the same thing.

Some described it as tasting “soapy” while others said it tasted more like “chemicals”.

“Thank you for posting this. I thought I was losing it/had Covid again when I tried a rotisserie chicken recently and it tasted…chemically and soapy? So odd,” replied one Redditor.

“Yes, I’ve noticed a distinct chlorine-like taste. I’ve stopped eating it, about a year(?) ago due to the strange chemical taste. I use the Albany, OR store,” wrote another Redditor.

“I’ve 100% have had the same thing happen,” another Redditor agreed. “The chicken has a chemical taste to it. Im guessing someone didn’t clean well enough after using the cleaning chemicals or something.”

Now, there is no way to know for sure what is causing the taste but one person commented saying they work at Costco’s Deli and tried to give a reasoning saying:

“Deli worker here. We get two different types of chickens,” commented another Redditor. “One is our in-house brand from our processing plant in Nebraska. The other is foster farms. The foster farm chickens are of lower quality and tend to cook differently than ours. Which is (due to) the fact that they’re water cooled while ours are air chilled. Our chickens are raised in Nebraska, while fosters are from California. If your chicken is gross, it’s most likely due to the fact that it’s a foster farm chicken.”

I mean, that could explain it but the hard part is, that means you’ll never know if you get a good chicken or bad chicken.

With that being said, I think I’ll skip the pre-cooked chicken and opt to make my own!

Have you noticed the Costco chicken’s tasting weird lately?
