Make a wish upon a star this New Year’s Eve with our wishing wand craft!
Encourage the whole family to think about their hopes and dreams this New Year’s Eve and for the coming year and put them onto your own wishing wand.
Instead of making a mood board, or a bucket list, put your wishes onto wishing stars to wave as you ring in the new year.
How to make a wishing wand
We are going to paint paper mache stars and attach our wishes to the back of them. This is a wonderful craft for every member of the family to make.

Supplies needed to make a wishing wand craft
- Paper mache star
- Wooden dowel rods
- Paint
- Glitter paint or glitter (optional – for extra sparkle)
- Curling ribbon
- Old magazines
- Hot glue gun
- Box cutter
Instructions for making a wishing wand craft
Step 1
Paint your paper mache stars. We chose silver, gold, and white paint for ours, but you can use whatever color makes you happy.
Step 2
Make your wishing wand sparkle by using glitter paint or glitter with glue to your star. Set aside to dry before moving onto the next step.
Step 3
Grab old magazines and have everyone cut out pictures of their wishes for the coming year. Glue the pictures to the back of your star. Don’t worry if they hang over the edge, we’ll take care of that in the next step.
Step 4
Use scissors or a box cutter to trim the excess paper hanging around your star.
Step 5
Use a box cutter to cut an ‘x’ into the bottom of the paper mache star. Put hot glue over the ‘x’ and insert the wood dowel into the star.
Step 6
Tie curling ribbon onto the dowel rod right below the star.
