Essential Oils to Keep Outdoor Bugs Away

If you are looking for a natural solution to get rid of those pesky bugs under control? A good idea is to use essential oils! It’s my favorite natural insecticide, it’s very inexpensive, and works well with sensitive skin (commercial repellent spray usually gives me skin irritation!). For sure, it’s the best way for pest control using natural remedies.

Note: Even if they use natural ingredients, it’s important to keep these natural bug repellents out of young children’s reach as essential oils should be used with extreme care.

There are different essential oils you can try depending on the type of bug you’re trying to keep away. Here are the top essential oils for making your own homemade bug repellent:

Peppermint

Are you trying to get rid of outdoor ants? Ants don’t like the smell of peppermint. A few drops of peppermint oil are an effective way to remove ants. You can create a solution to spray around your home or spray it directly on anthills to kill them directly at the source. Peppermint essential oil can also get rid of spiders, flies, fleas, and caterpillars.

Orange

This is perhaps one of the most useful essential oils to have on hand if you’re looking to keep outdoor bugs away. Orange essential oil is an effective insecticide that can drive away gnats, mosquitoes, ants, spiders, slugs, ticks, and more! Spray a solution around the areas in your yard, on your porch, or wherever else you want to be bug-free!

Lemon

One of my favorite oils – Lemon is another citrus essential oil that you can use to get rid of outdoor bugs. It gets rid of spiders, flies, and mosquitoes. You can also use it in an essential oil diffuser if you want to keep spiders at bay.

Citronella

A natural insect repellent – this essential oil is known to get rid of ants, fleas, flies, gnats, mosquitoes, moths, spiders, and ticks! Citronella oil is a great essential oil to always have on hand during the spring and summer months. You can make your own citronella candles to keep around, too.

Lavender

Another effective essential oil against bugs is lavender essential oil. It’s known to get rid of flies, ticks, fleas, chiggers, and other pests. Simply spray lavender oil around your yard or porch to keep these bugs away. As an added bonus – if you use it indoors, the smell of lavender helps have a restful sleep.
