Mardi Gras Crafts for Kids
When I think of Mardi Gras I think of fun parades, shiny beads, delicious food and elaborate costumes and masks. Of course, everything you see is in the traditional Mardi Gras color scheme – purple, green, and gold.
Although we may not have parades as big as those in New Orleans, my kids still like to go to a small local parade to catch a few beads and have some fun. This year we made our own masks to help us get in the spirit.
Mardi Gras Kids Craft Supplies:
- plain masks
- acrylic paints
- feathers
- fake jewels and beads
- glitter glue
- any other decorations you want to add!
Make a Mask
I put the paints out first and let my two kids put a base of color on the plain white masks.
We had to let them dry and apply a second coat to cover all of the white.
Easy Mask
Once the paint was dry, the really fun part began!
They used a lot of colored glitter glue and jewels to add sparkle and dimension to the masks.
I remember using regular glue and sprinkling glitter on my mask when I made these as a child. I don’t think we had pre-mixed ”glitter glue” back then! However, we all know that sprinkled glitter is messy and mom will find glitter all over the house for the next 3 weeks. So seriously, “glitter glue” is the only way to go.
Masks to Make
I can’t believe how much fun these two had making their masks together. They kept adding more bling, feathers, and then a little more bling, just because. But that’s the fun of it!
Happy Mardi Gras!
More Kids Activities
Mardi Gras is just one of many celebrations your children can enjoy throughout the year. They can make a mask for others holidays – add some bunny ears for a simple Easter mask or turkey feathers for a Thanksgiving mask. Beautiful masks. My son loves to wear masks (the zorro one, especially), and making one will keep him occupied.
Thank you! Yes, I think most kids love to wear masks of any kind but especially ones they can make themselves!
