I love the old phrase, “the early bird gets the worm”.  I know that might make me sound old, but in life it generally is true.

Have you seen The Angry Birds Movie – The Early Hatchling Gets the Worm?

It is a super cute movie short about what happens when a hatchling gets attached to a worm.

At some point in every parents life, their child is going to come to them with the age old question: Can I have a pet?

The Early Bird…or in this case, Hatchling gets the worm!

Of course we want to say yes. We want our children to learn compassion, after all.

Empathy.

Responsibility.

But, in the end, we know who’s going to end up with poo duty, and keeping that pet alive?

Plus, there’s the inevitable dealings of death.

Pets are a great way to teach children about the circle of life, but what if that child is too young to understand? It can be heart-wrenching.

In this Angry Birds: Hatchlings video, the young hatchling finds a worm and does the unthinkable: turns it into a pet. They play together, sleep together, and all is hunky dory until the worm goes missing…take a look!

Okay, okay, so this is really more funny than lesson-y, but it still makes me think about my kids with their first pet every time I see it.

And I giggle.

And smile.

And then watch it again, because ultimately it’s just a super cute video.

And yeah, when my kids ask me if they can have a pet…even knowing how things are always going to turn out…I always say yes.
