Easy Homemade Carpet Cleaner

Variations of this recipe have been around for a bit, but I have one important ingredient that makes it so much better than all the others. Some drops of essential oil will make a world of a difference – trust us on this. Our favorite brand is Young Living as they provide the best quality when it comes to essential oils – and the best part – at a reasonable price!

Since we want to get rid of all harsh chemicals and toxic chemicals in our home, we have been making our own homemade version of different cleaning products – from laundry detergent to a natural alternative to freshen our towels, it was only a matter of time until I found a way to keep the freshness of my carpets and get rid of unpleasant odors using natural products.

We use all of these products in our own home, and we love how they make our house smell great and clean. The great thing about these products is that they last a long time since we only need a few drops of essential oils and other simple ingredients.

This DIY carpet deodorizer powder doesn’t cost a lot of money – in fact, you probably already have all the ingredients at home. Just make sure to keep this mix out of small children’s reach!

Supplies Needed To Make Homemade Carpet Cleaner Powder

The key ingredient here that makes this recipe so perfect is the Purification essential oil. This essential oil blend specifically neutralizes odors. It’s a combination of citronella, lavender, lemongrass, rosemary, myrtle, and tea tree. The aromas are strong and powerful.

I also add in lemon for an extra fresh scent and because citrus fruits on their own can help to remove odors. These two oils together are magic for carpet fibers!

Directions To Make Homemade Carpet Cleaner

  1. All you need to do is combine equal parts Borax and baking soda, then add in oils and stir with a fork.
  2. To cover the carpeted areas on the main floor of my house I use 1/3 cup of each. I would start with that amount and increase it as needed.
  3. Sprinkle the homemade carpet cleaner all over your carpets and let it sit for at least an hour. You can leave it all night if you’d like!
  4. Then, vacuum the homemade carpet cleaner up. Your carpet will smell like a new carpet and give your house a lovely scent.

You’ll realize this is a great odor absorber. You can make this in large batches and save it for when you need it in an airtight container, but I prefer to make it individually each time.

I typically use it about once a month (maybe more often if I’m having company over and want the house to smell great)
