This homemade natural air freshener recipe is surprisingly easy to make because it only has 4 ingredients and works great. Making DIY air fresheners wasn’t something I even considered until I started using essential oils regularly at home. I love the ability to choose the scent and create the home smell I desire while overcoming the not-so-good smells!

Easy Air Freshener Recipe
For an air freshener to work it needs to be a clean, crisp smell that doesn’t feel like a disinfectant or overly perfumed.
- The smell needs to be pleasant (we prefer a clean scent over fresh flowers) but not overwhelming.
- The smell also needs to stay for more than a few minutes.
- The scent can’t smell like it is ADDING to the smell.
- A good homemade air freshener spray will replace and “clean up” the air around you.
The best thing about this recipe is that you only need household products that you most likely already have, enough water, and of course, your favorite essential oils.
Supplies Needed to Make Homemade Air Freshener
- 2 Cups Water
- 2 Tablespoons Baking Soda
- 1/2 cup of Rubbing alcohol
- 15-20 drops of Essential Oils (below I have my favorite combinations listed)
Instructions to Make Homemade Air Freshener
Step 1
Pour your water and rubbing alcohol into your bottle.
Step 2
Add the baking soda and the essential oils.
Step 3
Mix the bottle well for a couple of minutes so the baking soda dissolves – here’s an important part – don’t shake, swirl it.
Before Each Use
You will need to “re-swirl” the bottle before each use to fully combine the ingredients.
Essential Oil Combinations for Chemical-Free Air Freshener Scents
We love Essential oils. They just smell really good and they don’t give you that scent “hangover” you might get smelling the chemical substitutes…think about it next time you walk down the detergent aisle at your local grocery store.
My Favorite Essential Oil Combinations for Spray Air Freshener
Use around 10-15 drops of your favorite essential oil – we recommend trying these:

Substitutions for Essential Oils Air Freshener Sprays
If you don’t have essential oils on-hand we have also made this recipe with a teaspoon of vanilla extract or Almond Extract.
Both smell great – albeit, they make me a touch hungry!
Our Experience Making Room Freshener Spray
I love a fresh-smelling home, and let’s admit it – a houseful of bodies can create sooo many unwanted odors and unpleasant smells for a myriad of reasons! Cinnamon sticks just aren’t enough anymore. That’s why we are making our own air fresheners to keep a fresh scent in our home without any toxic chemicals.
It might sound like a crazy idea to some, but the good news is that there is an easy way to make a nice room spray with a delicious scent. Say goodbye to artificial fragrances – and welcome this natural alternative!
