Louis Armstrong was a legendary jazz musician known for his unique style and gravelly voice.
He was born in New Orleans and had a difficult childhood, working odd jobs.
The first horn he owned was a cornet, which he bought with money loaned from the Karnofskys, a Jewish family from the neighborhood that treated him as their own child.
Armstrong had no formal musical training until he was 11 years old and met music teacher Peter Davis at Colored Waif’s Home for Boys, a juvenile detention facility.
In 1923, he made his first recording with the King Oliver Creole Jazz Band.
