This is the first printable page in our black hole facts set!
  1. A black hole is a region of spacetime where gravity is so strong that nothing has enough energy to escape its event horizon.
  2. The existence of black holes was first predicted by the British polymath John Michell in the 18th century, based on the gravitational field of a massive object that could trap light.
  3. Black holes can be divided into several categories based on their size and mass: stellar black holes, which form from the collapse of massive stars and have masses ranging from a few to tens of times that of the Sun; intermediate black holes, with masses between 100 and 100,000 solar masses; and supermassive black holes, which are found at the centers of most galaxies, including the Milky Way, and can have masses equivalent to billions of suns.
  4. Small black holes can form in supernova explosions, when a massive star runs out of fuel and collapses in on itself, but they are also thought to exist as remnants of the early universe, known as “primordial” or “dark” stars.
  5. Stellar black holes have strong gravitational pulls that can trap nearby stars in their orbit, causing them to move in a highly elliptical path, or even get swallowed up.

This is the second printable page in our black hole facts set!
  1. The closest black hole to Earth is located about 1,000 light years away.
  2. The gravitational field around a black hole is so strong that even light cannot escape it, which is why black holes appear “black” and are invisible to telescopes that detect visible light.
  3. White holes are a theoretical concept that could exist as the “reverse” of a black hole, where matter and energy are ejected instead of being pulled in, but they have never been observed.
  4. A neutron star is the smallest, densest star in existence, between conventional stars and black holes.
  5. Stephen Hawking showed that black holes emit radiation, known as Hawking radiation, due to quantum effects near the event horizon, which causes them to lose mass and eventually evaporate over time.
