Are Hot Cocoa Cookies Gluten Free?
The original hot cocoa cookies recipe is not gluten free, but you can easily swap a couple of ingredients out with gluten free substitutes.
Replace the standard all-purpose flour with a gluten free all-purpose flour that already has xantham gum in it (like King Arthur gluten free all-purpose flour).
Make sure that your baking powder is gluten free, too.
There are plenty of hot chocolate mixes that are gluten free, like Swiss Miss milk chocolate mix.
Make sure that your marshmallows and chocolate chips are gluten free. Enjoy Life chocolate chips are gluten free, and Dandies marshmallows are gluten free and can be cut into mini marshmallows.
Also, double check that your vanilla extract is gluten free. I always double check the labels on any packaged food item, just to be safe!
Can You Make Vegan or Dairy Free Hot Chocolate Cookies?
This hot cocoa cookies recipe can be tailored to fit a vegan or dairy-free diet.
Vegan Hot Chocolate Cookie Recipe Suggestions:
Replace the egg with an egg replacer from the store, or make your own by mixing 1/4 cup of applesauce with 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder to make 1 “egg”.
Replace the butter with a vegan butter. If you can’t find vegan hot cocoa mix at the store, you can make it with Enjoy Life chocolate chips, cocoa powder, and sugar, all blended together into a powder.
Replace traditional chocolate chips with Enjoy Life vegan chocolate chips, and replace regular marshmallows with a vegan marshmallow, like Dandies.
If they only have the larger size, you can cut them into smaller pieces.
Dairy Free Hot Chocolate Cookie Recipe Suggestions:
Follow the vegan suggestions above, but you can add the egg back in if you want!
