Goop Recipe: Make Your Own Silly Putty

goop recipeThis is a great way to explore textures – have the kids find textures to imprint and watch them disappear, or to bounce and watch the balls melt.  Silly putty (aka goop) is great fun!  I love to make goop in place of playdough as both are moldable but, goop does not leave a residue so clean up is a breeze.

how to make goop silly putty

What you need:

  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1/2 teaspoon Borax

— dissolve the Borax into the water, set aside.

  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 2-3 ounces of white glue (roughly half a 4 ounce container)
  • Food Coloring (liquid kind)

how to make goop in a bag

Mix thoroughly.   We like to put the ingredients into a ziplock baggie to contain the mess.  Freezer bags are best as the seal withstands the kids assault.  The mix will  seem clumpy and stringy, but mix for several minuets, until all the ingredients are mixed.  Then let it sit for half an hour or longer.  Give the cornstarch time to absorb the moisture before kneading the bag again.  I bet it takes about 20-30 min of kneading to gain a putty consistency.

yoyo toy from playdough or goop

This makes 2 small baby food jars worth.  To store, dip the goop in water and place in airtight jar.  Do not eat.  Or better yet, fill a balloon with your goop mixture.  Now you have a toy that doubles as a yo-yo or stress-relieving ball… or you can break it open and have lots of goopy fun!

.

This is “non-toxic” but it is not “good” for you either.  Make sure that the kids are past the “put everything in their mouths” phase before they play with silly putty.
