Are you an origami fan? Do you love using your own hands to create beautiful projects? Then you’re in the right place! Today we are making a pretty origami tulip. All you need is a flat surface, two square sheets of origami paper in different colors, and a little bit of patience!
WHY IS ORIGAMI GOOD FOR KIDS?
Origami is more than a fun paper craft: it helps enhance fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination while encouraging patience and perseverance as they follow step-by-step instructions to complete a project.
Not only that, but origami also fosters creativity and imagination, allowing kids to experiment with different shapes and designs. Overall, it is a great activity for kids of all ages.
Now, grab your paper and let’s get folding our own origami tulip!
Let’s start with the tulip petals:
Step 1
Let’s get started! We are using a pink sheet for the petals but you can use any color you want. Fold in half horizontally and unfold.
Step 2
Fold in half vertically and unfold, then turn over with the white side up.
Step 3
Fold and unfold along the diagonal.
Step 4
Now, fold and unfold along the other diagonal.
Step 5
Now that it’s unfolded, let’s make a “waterbomb base”. To do this, start pushing the paper from both sides, and a triangle should form. Continue holding it down until the sides meet in the center. Then, push the paper down to form a triangle.
Step 6
Fold the corners up.
Step 7
Turn over, and repeat on the other side too.
Step 8
Fold a layer to the left on the front, and one to the right behind, creating new creases.
Step 9
Fold the left corner just a little bit past the center.
Step 10
Repeat on the other side.
Step 11
Tuck one flap into the other, it doesn’t matter which side goes in. Do this both in the front and the back so it looks like the picture below!
Step 12
Look at the tiny hole in the base, and blow into it to inflate it. Your origami tulip will look like this!
Step 13
Holding it from the base with one hand, use the other hand to “peel” each petal down, but very carefully!
Step 14
Now that the petals are done, we are going to start working on the origami stem! Put the origami petals aside, and grab the other piece of origami paper. Place with the white side up.
Step 15
Fold and unfold in half along the diagonal.
Step 16
Fold the top edges to the center
Step 17
Fold the bottom edges to the center. Your figure will look like a kite!
Step 18
Once more, fold the edges to the center line.
Step 19
Turn over.
Step 20
Fold the bottom up to the top corner.
Step 21
Fold in half, lengthwise.
Step 22
Outside reverse fold the leaf by pulling it backwards. Push down along the crease so it’ll keep this shape.
Step 23
Insert the stem into the base of the flower. Your tulip is finished!
Don’t feel discouraged if it takes a few tries to get it done – origami takes patience! We recommend making different ones in different colors to decorate your home or give to friends and family as cute DIY gifts.
