Butterfly Origami Tutorial

For this project, all you need is a square piece of paper and a pair of scissors. You can use any nice origami paper you have on hand, or get creative with scrapbook paper, old book pages, or even gift wrapping paper for a unique touch! 

Once you’ve completed your easy origami butterfly, there are so many ways to use it. You can incorporate them into handmade cards, use them as wall art or table decor, or even add them to gift wrapping for an extra special touch.

Step-by-step instructions:

Step 1: 

Start with a square piece of origami paper, with the colored side on top.

Step 2:

Fold in half lengthwise, and open.

Step 3:

Fold widthwise, and open.

Step 4:

Fold diagonally and form a triangle shape. Open it.

Repeat the previous step, in the other direction, and open again.

Now, squash fold the valley folds to create a multi-layered triangle.

Step 7:

Fold in half to create a right-angle triangle.

Step 8:

Take your scissors and cut off the corner on the end of the long side, in a semi-circular shape. Throw away the excess paper.

Snip, snip – shaping your butterfly!

Step 9:

Open the last fold, and pull the top left and right flaps towards the top edge.

Step 10:

Turn around, and pull the bottom end toward the front, making sure the tip of the triangle exceeds the edge. Then, while holding the figure, turn over and crease the tip over the other side, making the origami butterfly keep its shape.
