While famous Native Americans such as the Apache, Cherokee, and Navajo were the first inhabitants of the land area that became Maine, the first Europeans to land on the offshore islands and then map the coast of the main land were the Portuguese Estêvão Gomes in 1525. The first Europeans to settle in this part of the new world, however, were the French.
