Tundra facts FOR KIDS to Print

  1. A tundra ecosystem is a treeless land found in the Arctic and on the tops of high mountains.
  2. It has a harsh climate: cold, windy, and with little rainfall.
  3. Because of its extreme conditions and frozen soil, plant growth is almost impossible.
  4. 3 types of tundra exist: antarctic, alpine, and arctic. The main difference is their location, but they share the same characteristics.
  5. The Antarctic tundra is found in Antarctica and on several Antarctic and subantarctic islands.

Did you know these facts about the tundra?
  1. The Alpine tundra biome is located on high mountains like the Swiss Alps. As opposed to the Arctic tundra regions, this type is found away from the poles.
  2. The average temperature in the Arctic tundra is -30 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit (-34 to -6 degrees Celsius).
  3. The Arctic tundra biome is located in the far northern hemisphere, above the arctic circle the North Pole.
  4. Despite the low temperatures, there is a variety of animal species, including Arctic foxes, Arctic hares, polar bears, gray wolves, and musk oxen.
  5. The word tundra comes from the Finnish word Tunturia meaning “treeless plain”.

Bonus facts:

  • Climate change, greenhouse gases, and global warming pose a severe threat to the tundra.
  • To survive the climatic conditions of winter months, small mammals like the arctic ground squirrel hibernate for about 8 months of the year.
