20 years ago American Express launched their Membership Rewards program.   They were the first to offer points to their members that could be redeemed for rewards. My husband has carried an American Express card since the mid 80s, yet we didn’t sign up for the rewards program. I shudder to think how many points we have missed in those 20 years! Today the AmEx Membership Rewards program is bigger and better than ever.   The points can be redeemed for anything from Farmville and Amazon purchases to plane flights and hotel stays. Trip from Dallas mapI have been tasked with the grueling chore of designing a weekend getaway from Dallas using Membership Rewards points. I know!   I know!   It is pure torture! I live 20 minutes from DFW airport and would like to come up with something fun, fabulous and a bit off the beaten path. American Express is giving one of my readers a $100 AmEx gift card for a little planning assistance. To enter simply leave a comment below answering…

Where should I go?

Should I travel by train, plan or automobile?

What should I do when I get there?

You may leave a new answer each day.

The giveaway ends July 16, 2011 at midnight CST and the winner will be selected randomly and notified via email. I will be choosing my three favorite travel suggestions to explore further in future posts while bemoaning 20 lost years of rewards points…

  1. Fly from DFW to Chicago. From there rent a car, and take a road trip on the famous Route 66 from Chicago to Los Angeles and visit all the antique shops and cafes on Route 66. Then fly back to DFW from LAX Airport.

  2. Where should I go? Heritage Park aka Old City Park in Dallas is a wonderful experience for the kids to learn about times gone by. http://www.dallasheritagevillage.org/

Should I travel by train, plan or automobile? Take the DART Express Train and then the Bus as a field trip for the kids to learn more about public transportation http://www.dart.org/schedules/schedules.asp

What should I do when I get there? Enjoy the Old Time Music Jam on 7-16 (Sat) http://www.dallasheritagevillage.org/Event_Detail.aspx?EID=397

Also pack a lunch as there is not a place to eat there.

  3. I would suggest that you come to Boston! I just recently moved here myself and have fallen in love with the city. Fly in and then stay downtown where you can walk everywhere. Go see a Red Sox game while you are here or take in the wonderful Boston Pops orchestra. The history here alone is worth a trip. Walk to streets of downtown for the historic Freedom Trail. There are so many options you would not be bored and anything you do would be a great time!
