How to Make Cast Iron Skillet Pizza
Preheat Oven to 450 Degrees F
Step 1
In a large mixing bowl, whisk the flour, baking powder and salt until well combined.
Step 2
- Add the olive oil and water together in a measuring cup.
- Slowly add the water and oil mixture to the flour mixture mixing the two together in a large bowl as you add more liquid.
- Continue mixing the dough with a wooden spoon or with your hands until the dough is soft, but not sticky, and well-combined.
If the pizza dough is dry: Add water a tablespoon at a time until the dough is soft.
Step 3
This is what your pizza dough will look like when it is fully combined.
Step 4
Preheat your cast iron skillet in the oven for 3-5 minutes.
Step 5
While your pan heats, roll out the pizza dough into a round shape big enough to cover the bottom of your pan plus an inch up each side.
Allow the dough to relax and re-stretch as needed.
You can decide how thick you want the homemade pizza crust.
Step 6
After the pan is preheated, remove the cast iron skillet from the oven and place on a wire rack.
Sprinkle the bottom of the pan with cornmeal and place dough in the bottom of the pan working the edges up the side.
BE CAREFUL, THE PAN WILL BE HOT.
Step 7
Place the pan with the pizza crust dough back in the oven and bake for 3-5 minutes watching for it to start to rise. Remove the dough when you see this happening.
Spread olive oil across the homemade pizza crust dough once you have it positioned where you want it.
Step 8
Spread pizza sauce evenly over the crust all the way to the edges of the pizza.
Tip: Add red pepper flakes, garlic powder, salt and dried Italian herbs to your favorite store-bought pizza sauce.
Step 9
Top with all the pizza toppings you desire! My favorite pizza toppings are caramelized onions, sausage, mushrooms, olives…the more veggies the better. Add some parmesan cheese and then top with mozzarella cheese.
Try a different combination each time you make pizza until you find a favorite.
Pssst…pineapple tastes good on almost any pizza!
Step 10
Bake your pizza for 10-12 minutes or until the mozzarella cheese is golden brown and bubbling and the crust is completely baked.
Step 11
Slice and serve immediately!
How to Store Leftover Pizza
If you have leftover pizza, store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. You can freeze leftover pizza for up to 5 months.
How to Reheat Leftover Pizza
You can always microwave a slice of pizza for 70 seconds or until hot, but it will be soggy and the homemade crust will be extra chewy. I prefer to place a piece of leftover pizza on a baking pan or piece of tin foil and place in the toaster oven at 450 degrees for 5 minutes or until the cheese starts to bubble.
