Life Journal Workshop – Creative Play Date Ideas for You

Hello and welcome to another lesson in creating a life journal. If you are new here, be sure to check out some of the other lessons on how and why to create a life journal. Each post is full of journaling resources, creative ideas and random musings from yours truly. I am not a professional artist although I love to create art. I am a writer, educator, coach and closet Martha Stewart who has discovered I need more creativity in my life. I hope you look at these lessons like a creative play date with yourself. Play dates are not just for kids!

Are you a closet Martha Stewart?

Who are you? Are you a closet Martha Stewart or perhaps you dream of being Georgia O’Keefe? Or Emily Dickinson? Have you fallen in love with the new trend of art journals, mixed media art and collage like I have? I am still learning, but the process is fun! A life journal combines the best of both art and writing. It is a safe place for you to express your creativity, play, dump, moan, get mad, celebrate or just be yourself. We all need a safe space in our lives for creative expression. Even if it is just a written journal using colorful pens and a few magazine images, the life journal is a welcome place for you to share and grow.

Why women need play dates, too!

I recently moved to Santa Barbara, California and it’s been a little lonely even though I love my life, my new house and the community. I miss my Dallas friends, meaningful conversations, my awesome mastermind group… starting over is a challenge and my journal has been my place to share some of these challenges. One of the people I miss the most is my friend Tina. She and I would get together once a week or every other week for a creative play date. Let me tell you, play dates are not just for kids!

Using SoulCollage ® as inspiration for journaling

Schedule a play date Sometimes we would work on a project together. One time we took a virtual class with one of our friends and favorite artists, Violette Naranjo Clark. Other times we would just paint or draw. Then we discovered Zentangle ® and we were HOOKED! We would spend hours at La Madeleine in Plano tearing magazine images out, talking about them and beginning to make SoulCollage ® cards. We even went to Santa Cruz in September to become SoulCollage ® facilitators. It was so great to have 4 days to play together again and to learn more about this beautiful process. Now our play dates are virtual and we get together on Skype every few weeks to share our cards and read what we have been journaling about them. Here we are at my kitchen table with my daughter, furiously trying to finish up a few cards before heading to our training in Santa Cruz. By the way, my daughter loved selecting images also. This is an incredible process to try with kids and adults. Here is one of my cards that celebrates my love of dogs and their importance in my life. Minette Riordan soulcollage facilitator In the words of founder Seena Frost, “SoulCollage ® is a process which begins as simple creative fun, but which suddenly may surprise and awaken you! Learn how to access your intuition and create an incredible deck of cards with deep personal meaning that will help you with life’s questions.” If you would be interested in learning more about SoulCollage ® or scheduling a private SoulCollage ® session with Minette, you can email me.

Remember to journal this week!

I have two lessons I would like to encourage you to do this week, one in your life journal and one with a friend: 1. Write an autobiography of your creative self and draw a self-portrait or print out a photo to go with it. At your most creative, who are you? How do you like to play? How do you express creativity? Write this as if you were describing yourself to someone else. 2. Make a creative play date for yourself. Find a crafty girlfriend or another writer and invite her to play. You don’t have to prepare anything for the play date. Just get your journal, pens, markers and a few magazines. Make a collage and write about it, share what you create. No pressure to make art, just the opportunity to play and share in the creative process. Your life journal is an invaluable tool for self-discovery. Journaling regularly is a fun, rewarding and relaxing experience. It can become an important part of your self-care regimen daily. As we get ready to go into the holiday season, don’t forget to take care of yourself! Remember to come and play with me on Facebook on the Life Journal Workshop page and share what’s going on in your world. // //
