Last week we started a series of articles about Outdoor Living.   One of the benefits of living in the Dallas area is that outdoor spaces can be used throughout the year when designed correctly. outdoor living spaceToday we are looking at how families use their Texas yards and how creating family spaces can create family memories.

outdoor family spacesCreating a Family Outdoor Space:

  1. Take the family room outside:   Setting up a back porch with a sitting area and outdoor kitchen can keep the family all together in the evenings.   Creating a place where there is shade and a breeze can give extra square footage to your house.   Families can spend time eating, laughing and playing together.
  2. Remember to have fun:   Creating a place for the family to play together is essential.   It could be as inexpensive as adding a game table to the back porch or a croquet set to the back lawn.   I love this putting green positioned poolside convenient for a family putting tournament.
  3. Remember the adults:   Often the backyard becomes the place for swings, playsets and riding toys.   Planning places specifically for adults to sit and enjoy can help encourage the family outside together.

Kids Activitie Blog created this outdoor room from a family sunflower garden.   Sunflowers are so hearty and can take the hot Texas temperatures so it’s a great idea to include in your outdoor space. We also love the idea of planting a garden with your kids to use as a backdrop to your outdoor space.  Teaching your kids about fresh foods is also a great way to get them more involved in the cooking process.  Read more about creating a garden with your kids on NorthTexasKids. 1. I’m very jealous of all these Texas gardens! It’s true that it’s important to remember the adults, as my own garden often seems to resemble a playground!
