Fun Food: {Fun and Healthy} Snacks for Kids

Fun Food

My son is often hesitant to try new foods so I’m always trying to come up with creative ways to encourage him to eat something different and fun food seems to help.  I also don’t have a lot of time to prepare anything too elaborate so that’s where my cookie cutters come in handy. Cookie cutters can transform a humble sandwich into a fun work of art and it takes just minutes to create. The kids can also have fun creating these cute sandwiches for themselves – a great way to get them involved in the kitchen! For our cute underwater world lunch in the above photo, I used a fish shaped cookie cutter to cut a ham sandwich into a fun shape. I then added a healthy salad and some fruit. Lettuce leaves were used to make some seaweed. I used a vegetable peeler to make the thin slices of carrot, arranged to look like some colorful coral. The fish eyes were made using raisins, and finally the bubbles blowing from the mouths of the fish were made with red grapes.

Here’s another cute idea for using cookie cutters with sandwiches – the peek-a-boo sandwich. Spread one slice of bread with your sandwich topping (this technique works great with spreads like pb and j sandwiches). Next, use a cookie cutter to cut a shape out of the center of second slice of bread. Place the cut slice of bread on top to make your sandwich. Don’t throw away that shape you cut from the center of the bread! It can be used for other snacks – keep reading below for ideas.

If you make a peek-a-boo sandwich, the shape that you cut from the center of the bread can be used to make smaller, bite-size sandwiches – perfect for snacks or afternoon tea. You could also use them to make bite sized french-toast dippers or use them to make some fun grilled cheese snacks. Cookie cutters don’t have to be limited to sandwiches of course. They are great for cutting fun shapes into cheese or fruit, like the watermelon picture above.
