Where should I go? *GIVEAWAY*

20 years ago American Express launched their Membership Rewards program.   They were the first to offer points to their members that could be redeemed for rewards.

My husband has carried an American Express card since the mid 80s, yet we didn’t sign up for the rewards program.

I shudder to think how many points we have missed in those 20 years!

Today the AmEx Membership Rewards program is bigger and better than ever.   The points can be redeemed for anything from Farmville and Amazon purchases to plane flights and hotel stays.

Trip from Dallas mapI have been tasked with the grueling chore of designing a weekend getaway from Dallas using Membership Rewards points.

I know!   I know!

It is pure torture!

I live 20 minutes from DFW airport and would like to come up with something fun, fabulous and a bit off the beaten path.

American Express is giving one of my readers a $100 AmEx gift card for a little planning assistance.

To enter simply leave a comment below answering…

Where should I go?

Should I travel by train, plan or automobile?

What should I do when I get there?

You may leave a new answer each day.

For an additional entry you can tweet:

I told @Texasholly to go *your answer here* with @AmericanExpress – http://bit.ly/reiObM for a chance to win $100 AmEx gift card

If you tweet, please leave a comment.

The giveaway ends July 16, 2011 at midnight CST and the winner will be selected randomly and notified via email.

I will be choosing my three favorite travel suggestions to explore further in future posts while bemoaning 20 lost years of rewards points…

She is Dallas info:   The $100 AmEx gift card is being provided by American Express.   American Express is also placing 150,000 Membership Rewards points in my newly opened rewards account to plan this trip.   Thanks American Express!

  3. tweet-http://twitter.com/mami2jcn/status/88949711112908800

  4. Jennifer Marie says:

Maybe you could look into this? Outdoor Sculpture Tour

  5. I’d do a staycation and go to a really nice hotel in Dallas – Turtle Creek is my vote!

  6. You should come to Chicago and visit the Bean in Millennium Park!

  7. I’d go by car (I love driving and seeing new country), and head to Arizona to see the Grand Canyon!

  8. You should go to Philadelphia by plane.

The Philadelphia zoo is the oldest zoo in the US the kids would love it! After that the Please Touch Museum again awesome for the kids and then head into downtown to the constitution center and the Liberty Bell. Tons fun things to do while learning history. Then when you are tired of the history you can head down the road to the Jersey shore for fun in the sun or over to Hershey Park the sweetest place on earth for candy and amusements while mom hits the chocolate spa for relaxation. It would be a great family vacation

  9. I’m going to send you on my photography dream trip:

You should travel by car through New Mexico and Colorado taking pictures of the beautiful sites. I love movies filmed in the midwest and one movie that always inspires my photography dreams is Boys on the Side. What I remember most about that movie, besides how cute Drew Barrymore was, is the scenery and I’ve always wanted to take pictures in that area.

So grab your car keys, your camera ,and an energy drink (you’ll need to stay hydrated) and have fun!

  10. Fly to San Francisco and take the Alcatraz tour. You can get some haunted vibes, take a lot of memorable pictures, and see the amazing sights of the Golden Gate city. It’s a photographer’s haven, and I guarantee you won’t be bored!

  11. Go check out Yellowstone and go by plane! It is beautiful!

  12. Fly to Rome (or Pisa for that matter), train to the Cinque Terre, hike the 5 towns (they are easy hikes). The best part is that you can stop for a real lunch AND gelatos in each town! (yes, for me it is all about the food!)

  13. Definitely Kentucky. The home of Churchill Downs, Keeneland, Kentucky Bourbon and Ruth Hunt Candy company. Spend a weekend touring anyone of our beautiful horse farms or place your bets on a race at Keeneland, take a side trip to Berea and explore the beauty and handiwork of our local artists from quilts to baskets to blown glass. Too hot to do all that? Explore one of the many lake areas that are part of the Daniel Boone National Forest, from Red River Gorge, Natural Bridge , Somerset Lake or Cave Run. The one thing I know you will find here is hospitality, smiling faces and the urge to come back and see more.

  14. Take a short trip to Granbury! It’s less then 2 hours from Dallas and just 30 minutes south west of Fort Worth.
You can shop around the Historical Square or Dine at “The Merry Heart Tearoom” or “Stringfellows” Go Antiquing, Take a cruise on the Riverboat or rent jet skies for some fun on the lake or go see a live play at the historical Opera House. If you will be staying overnight, you can stay at one of the many historical Bed and Breakfasts in town. You can also go over to Glenn Rose and see the Fossil Ridge Wildlife Park.

The Aquarium is always a fun day activity too. Who doesn’t love the Shark tunnel? 🙂

  15. You should go to San Diego so you can eat at Phils BBQ and go to the beach! (We watch a lot of TV about restaurants in other places)

  16. I’ve had far too much fun with this, by the way. I think you should drive about 2.5 hours to Graham, TX and check out Wildcatter Ranch. It looks like a really gorgeous resort in the north Texas hills that is nothing but pure relaxation. Horseback riding, ATV rides and lazy time on the water. Sounds pretty much perfect to me!

  17. I would say Texas has a lot to offer so no need to go far, very near by there are all kinds of places to go horse riding. But if your more the hotel and indoors type I say hop across the border North or East and go check out a casino.

  18. What about coming to Canada, Niagara-on-the-lake is a beautiful area, and you can visit the falls while you are there!

  19. Louisianna! Enjoy some gumbo and good music

  20. I think you should fly into MSP and visit the Mall of America!

  24. I say travel by train if you can because everyone should do it at least once in their lives! It’s totally a peaceful way to travel! Take the route that covers the most US that you can see!

  25. You should go to all the local children’s museums in and around Dallas. Most of them are free, and very exciting for children of all ages 🙂

  26. Ok, I’m going to send you to my home state. Being summer time, you need to fly to Seattle, and experience the PNW in all of it’s glory. Hit Mt. Rainier, Pikes Place Market, visit Snoqualmie Falls, go to a Mariners game (maybe against the Rangers), and venture to the Olympic Penninsula, stopping by Ocean Shores for the kite festival.

Enjoy some Northwest cuisine, such as Pacific Salmon, fresh dungeoness crab pulled from Puget Sound, etc. Visit some of the best micro breweries and wineries in the country.

Oh man, I’m making myself homesick…

  27. Hmmmm…close? I would head to the Riverwalk in San Antonio.

Should I travel by train, plan or automobile? This is definitely a road trip.
What should I do when I get there? Hike, explore, and picnic at the gorgeous surroundings 🙂

  32. If I was Holly I would take a nice 9 hour flight over to Greece, from there Holly can enjoy a train ride from the famous city of Athens, to the shore town or Bari. Once in Bari holy can hop on a giant boat where she can travel to the island of Corfu. Corfu is an amazing island with its northern city views of Albania. The reason you should go here is because it is one of the most beautiful and friendly places I have been. The locals are extremely friendly and the sun is always shining bright.

  33. I would suggest you take a quick trip to Jackson, MS for some good music and good food. I tweeted the giveaway.

  34. I would suggest traveling by plane to visit Indianapolis, Indiana.

There are plenty of interesting and enjoyable places to visit in the area, such as the Fountain Square (for duck pin bowling and swing dancing), Monument Circle, and the Indianapolis Canal. If you enjoy the theater and music, plan to visit the Indiana Repertory Theater, Murat Theater, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, and the Beef and Boards Dinner Theater. Those who enjoy art and history will appreciate the Indianapolis Art Museum, Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, and Indiana World War Memorial Plaza. Sports fans should visit NCAA Hall of Champions and Indianapolis Motor Speedway with the Speedway Hall of Fame Museum, as well as Victory Field, Lucas Oil Stadium, and Conseco Fieldhouse. Children will enjoy the Conner Prairie, Indianapolis Zoo, and Indianapolis Children’s Museum. For meals, visit Broad Ripple or Mass Ave for a wide variety unique restaurants, including Bazbeaux Pizza. If you want to travel outside Indianapolis, then take a day trip to Brown County, particularly Nashville, Indiana…or drive north to the Indiana Dunes. Of course, my suggestions include too many for one trip…but there’s plenty of options for a delightful vacation!

Reyes (this really is a must! so beautiful!), or you could drive to the Jelly Belly Factory for the kids, 6 Flags Vallejo is driveable. If no kids, you could take a wine tour to Napa/Sonoma – you don’t have to be a ‘drinker’ to go. It is just simply amazing and beautiful. We have both the San Francisco Giants and Oakland Athletics for ballgame experiences! Depending on when you come, you may be able to see the Rangers vs. Athletics (since you are from texas!) And I work for the Oakland Athletics in the press box, I could give a press box tour – both adults and kids love it!

Put together some great tunes for the trip. Be sure to bring the Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid cd by Bob Dylan along for the ride. It’s perfect when you hit Arizona and Colorado.

  111. I strongly recommend Yellowstone National Park. You may want to fly there and rent a car locally. There are tons of fun activities you can do there, sightseeing, camping, observing wild animals…

  112. You should go take a hike at the Fort Worth Nature Center and take photographs of the wildflowers.

  113. Fly to Arizona and drive on route 66

  114. Go anywhere there is a beach and go by car so you can stop all you want 🙂

  115. I say go by car and somewhere that let’s you go canoeing with your husband to the other side of shore and just spend time together.

You should fly and come to Ohio and come to the Football Hall of Fame! (Canton, Ohio)

  119. I think a wonderful place to visit is Savannah, Georgia. It is the definition of southern living and hospitality. You can fly there and rent a car if you’d like to travel only 20 miles away to Tybee Island (a beautiful beach on the Atlantic). Otherwise, stay in the downtown area, walk around, take a tour of the historical houses (and find those featured in Midnight In The Garden of Good & Evil), check out all of the amazing antique stores, and eat at delicious southern restaurants. You won’t want to miss Paula Dean’s restaurant either!

  120. Judy Hunter says:

I highly suggest a visit to Athens, GA. You can fly into the Atlanta airport or the small one in Athens. Why Athens? It’s known for it’s eclectic music scene (B-52s, REM, Widespread Panic, etc.), is home to the University of Georgia, and has the most amazing restaurants you could ever try. Take in a football game at the UGA stadium to see the Bulldawgs in action. Then, unwind at a delicious dinner at my favorite tapas restaurant, Speakeasy. Their food is seriously unbelievable. Afterwards, check out a concert at the famous Georgia Theatre or the 40 Watt, where many bands have played over the years, some before going on to be major influences in the music world. I remember when Dave Matthews played there and no one knew who he was! Stroll amongst the blooms at the Botanical Gardens and be sure to eat at The Grit, Athens most famous vegetarian eatery, for a lunch to remember. I am not a huge tofu fan, but theirs is delicious. You will love Athens! It’s my hometown and I miss it like crazy. 🙂

  121. How about Harkers Island, NC?

  122. You should go to Austin, TX in March next year to attend the South by Southwest festival. It’s only about 3-4 hours away from you, so you wouldn’t have to travel far.

  123. I think going to the Dallas Zoo would be neat!

  124. Fly into tiny Eureka, CA airport (you’ll need to take a commuter flight). Rent a car in the airport and it’s just a short drive (less than an hour) to the victorian town of Ferndale. The Shaw House Bed & Breakfast is to die for! From there you can walk around the town, visit the amazing gigantic Redwoods- where you can even drive your car through a tree trunk! Visit the amazing Trinidad state beach and see the lighthouse. See elk near the little red school house. A short drive takes you to Southern Oregon, where the coast is a must-see. Enjoy!

  126. Well, since we just got back from the beach, I think you should write a post about flying into Myrtle Beach and discovering places to go and things to do that are unusual and not as cheesy and touristy. It seems like a great deal of the things there are marketed towards tourists, but there are many people who live there year-round, so I know there has to be more we don’t know- delicious restaurants the locals love, beautiful gardens, surrounding less-populated islands to visit, etc. I would love to read something like that!

  127. Judy Hunter says:

I really want to take our grandchildren to Disney Land/World, but have no idea where to start. So many webpages have info, but it’s just confusing. I’d love to hear a first-hand account- flying to Orlando/Cali or driving, what hotel you stayed at/why we should/shouldn’t stay there, how to play the trip and what are the must-see things. Plus,, I’m sure it would be fun for you. LOL! Maybe you could even get Disney to give u discounts for a review. 🙂

  137. Judy Hunter says:

How about a hometown post? Take pics of your hometown, local businesses, beautiful places to visit. Not sure if you live in your hometown, so you may not have to go anywhere at all! It would be fun, local businesses would be excited to promote themselves, and you can show others how great your town is!

  138. Go local. you’ll be surprise how many places are in your locale that you never got to check out. Then steal away and pretend to be tourists 🙂

  144. I think you should take a trip to San Antonio. Go to the river walk. I was there once and didn’t get to do hardly anything I wanted to. I loved Ripley’s Museum though. It wouldn’t be a bad drive from where you are.

  145. You should visit the Alamo by car, and soak up the history of Texas’s heroic past.

After you can visit the Louisville Slugger museum (you get a free bat at the end of the tour), stop by the Louisville Bats stadium for a minor league game, and then have breakfast at Lynn’s Paradise Cafe (it’s been featured on both the Food Network and the Travel channel).
