Where should I go? *GIVEAWAY*
20 years ago American Express launched their Membership Rewards program. They were the first to offer points to their members that could be redeemed for rewards.
My husband has carried an American Express card since the mid 80s, yet we didn’t sign up for the rewards program.
I shudder to think how many points we have missed in those 20 years!
Today the AmEx Membership Rewards program is bigger and better than ever. The points can be redeemed for anything from Farmville and Amazon purchases to plane flights and hotel stays.
I have been tasked with the grueling chore of designing a weekend getaway from Dallas using Membership Rewards points.
I know! I know!
It is pure torture!
I live 20 minutes from DFW airport and would like to come up with something fun, fabulous and a bit off the beaten path.
American Express is giving one of my readers a $100 AmEx gift card for a little planning assistance.
To enter simply leave a comment below answering…
Where should I go?
Should I travel by train, plan or automobile?
What should I do when I get there?
You may leave a new answer each day.
For an additional entry you can tweet:
I told @Texasholly to go *your answer here* with @AmericanExpress – http://bit.ly/reiObM for a chance to win $100 AmEx gift card
If you tweet, please leave a comment.
The giveaway ends July 16, 2011 at midnight CST and the winner will be selected randomly and notified via email.
I will be choosing my three favorite travel suggestions to explore further in future posts while bemoaning 20 lost years of rewards points…
She is Dallas info: The $100 AmEx gift card is being provided by American Express. American Express is also placing 150,000 Membership Rewards points in my newly opened rewards account to plan this trip. Thanks American Express!

You should come to Chicago and visit the Bean in Millennium Park!
When I go to new cities I always love to visit the zoo! So I vote for some time getting to see it. http://www.dallaszoo.com/
cindyloumagee at yahoo dot com
Go to the Grapevine Sea Life Aquarium http://www.visitsealife.com/Grapevine/ and take the Shark Walk!
I’d go by car (I love driving and seeing new country), and head to Arizona to see the Grand Canyon!
You should go to Philadelphia by plane.
The Philadelphia zoo is the oldest zoo in the US the kids would love it! After that the Please Touch Museum again awesome for the kids and then head into downtown to the constitution center and the Liberty Bell. Tons fun things to do while learning history. Then when you are tired of the history you can head down the road to the Jersey shore for fun in the sun or over to Hershey Park the sweetest place on earth for candy and amusements while mom hits the chocolate spa for relaxation. It would be a great family vacation
I’m going to send you on my photography dream trip:
You should travel by car through New Mexico and Colorado taking pictures of the beautiful sites. I love movies filmed in the midwest and one movie that always inspires my photography dreams is Boys on the Side. What I remember most about that movie, besides how cute Drew Barrymore was, is the scenery and I’ve always wanted to take pictures in that area.
So grab your car keys, your camera ,and an energy drink (you’ll need to stay hydrated) and have fun!

Fly to San Francisco and take the Alcatraz tour. You can get some haunted vibes, take a lot of memorable pictures, and see the amazing sights of the Golden Gate city. It’s a photographer’s haven, and I guarantee you won’t be bored!
Go check out Yellowstone and go by plane! It is beautiful!
Fly to Rome (or Pisa for that matter), train to the Cinque Terre, hike the 5 towns (they are easy hikes). The best part is that you can stop for a real lunch AND gelatos in each town! (yes, for me it is all about the food!)
Definitely Kentucky. The home of Churchill Downs, Keeneland, Kentucky Bourbon and Ruth Hunt Candy company. Spend a weekend touring anyone of our beautiful horse farms or place your bets on a race at Keeneland, take a side trip to Berea and explore the beauty and handiwork of our local artists from quilts to baskets to blown glass. Too hot to do all that? Explore one of the many lake areas that are part of the Daniel Boone National Forest, from Red River Gorge, Natural Bridge , Somerset Lake or Cave Run. The one thing I know you will find here is hospitality, smiling faces and the urge to come back and see more.
Take a short trip to Granbury! It’s less then 2 hours from Dallas and just 30 minutes south west of Fort Worth.
You can shop around the Historical Square or Dine at “The Merry Heart Tearoom” or “Stringfellows” Go Antiquing, Take a cruise on the Riverboat or rent jet skies for some fun on the lake or go see a live play at the historical Opera House. If you will be staying overnight, you can stay at one of the many historical Bed and Breakfasts in town. You can also go over to Glenn Rose and see the Fossil Ridge Wildlife Park.
The Aquarium is always a fun day activity too. Who doesn’t love the Shark tunnel? 🙂

You should go to San Diego so you can eat at Phils BBQ and go to the beach! (We watch a lot of TV about restaurants in other places)
I’ve had far too much fun with this, by the way. I think you should drive about 2.5 hours to Graham, TX and check out Wildcatter Ranch. It looks like a really gorgeous resort in the north Texas hills that is nothing but pure relaxation. Horseback riding, ATV rides and lazy time on the water. Sounds pretty much perfect to me!
I would say Texas has a lot to offer so no need to go far, very near by there are all kinds of places to go horse riding. But if your more the hotel and indoors type I say hop across the border North or East and go check out a casino.

You should go to all the local children’s museums in and around Dallas. Most of them are free, and very exciting for children of all ages 🙂
Ok, I’m going to send you to my home state. Being summer time, you need to fly to Seattle, and experience the PNW in all of it’s glory. Hit Mt. Rainier, Pikes Place Market, visit Snoqualmie Falls, go to a Mariners game (maybe against the Rangers), and venture to the Olympic Penninsula, stopping by Ocean Shores for the kite festival.
Enjoy some Northwest cuisine, such as Pacific Salmon, fresh dungeoness crab pulled from Puget Sound, etc. Visit some of the best micro breweries and wineries in the country.
Oh man, I’m making myself homesick…
Take a flight to Cancun and lay on the beach for the entire time you are there!
Hmmmm…close? I would head to the Riverwalk in San Antonio.
Far away? Plane trip to Europe.
Where should I go? On a tour of the national parks!
Should I travel by train, plan or automobile? This is definitely a road trip.

You should fly to Coeur d’Alene, ID. They have one of the nations best golf courses, Silverwood theme park, clear lakes to swim in and mountains for hiking. you coud even be adventurous and go parasailing.
I would head to the nearest water park.
My dream weekend would be a luxury Hawaiian or Bahama island cruise. Fly to the port of entry.
If I was Holly I would take a nice 9 hour flight over to Greece, from there Holly can enjoy a train ride from the famous city of Athens, to the shore town or Bari. Once in Bari holy can hop on a giant boat where she can travel to the island of Corfu. Corfu is an amazing island with its northern city views of Albania. The reason you should go here is because it is one of the most beautiful and friendly places I have been. The locals are extremely friendly and the sun is always shining bright.
I would suggest you take a quick trip to Jackson, MS for some good music and good food. I tweeted the giveaway.
I would suggest traveling by plane to visit Indianapolis, Indiana.
There are plenty of interesting and enjoyable places to visit in the area, such as the Fountain Square (for duck pin bowling and swing dancing), Monument Circle, and the Indianapolis Canal. If you enjoy the theater and music, plan to visit the Indiana Repertory Theater, Murat Theater, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, and the Beef and Boards Dinner Theater. Those who enjoy art and history will appreciate the Indianapolis Art Museum, Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, and Indiana World War Memorial Plaza. Sports fans should visit NCAA Hall of Champions and Indianapolis Motor Speedway with the Speedway Hall of Fame Museum, as well as Victory Field, Lucas Oil Stadium, and Conseco Fieldhouse. Children will enjoy the Conner Prairie, Indianapolis Zoo, and Indianapolis Children’s Museum. For meals, visit Broad Ripple or Mass Ave for a wide variety unique restaurants, including Bazbeaux Pizza. If you want to travel outside Indianapolis, then take a day trip to Brown County, particularly Nashville, Indiana…or drive north to the Indiana Dunes. Of course, my suggestions include too many for one trip…but there’s plenty of options for a delightful vacation!
For a quick weekend getaway I think you should fly to Savannah for tours of the homes and learn about the history and ghost stories. I have always wanted to do that!
I tweeted for an additional entry: http://twitter.com/#!/redlotusmama/status/88979351881789442
ok, here’s my idea..go by train to Camden, SC to the Bloomsbury Inn Bed and Breakfast. First though, go to Ruche.com and buy some awesome vintage clothing and don’t forget the heels and floppy hat. Ask for tea on the train as well! http://www.bloomsburyinn.com/

You should go to Hershey PA! Because that’s where I want to go!! Take a plane… it’s a long drive from Texas. And hit up the chocolate while you’re there!

I would love to go the beach, maybe Myrtle Beach or somewhere in Floriday. We’re originally from the East Coast and I miss the beach the most. We’d probably drive. We have 3 boys ages 5, 7 and 12 and our last plane ride was NOT fun lol!

Colonial Williamsburg, VA 🙂 If you appreciate history, it’s very fun!
You should fly into Germany and take a tour of Southern Germany. The smaller towns are just beautiful and the people are incredibly nice. Plus, most of them speak English as a second language, so no worries on that front, either! Be sure to visit Nuremburg and Erlangen, two of my most favorite places. When we were there, we got cheap train/plane tickets to surrounding countries, too. You can very easily travel around Germany by train, too. Have fun on your travels!

Take a plane to Columbus, OH. Two of my favorite dessert places are there: Pistacia Vera in German Village and Jenny’s Splendid Ice Cream (multiple locations around Columbus). Also two of my favorite places for lunch: Schmidt’s Sausage House in German Villiage and Villiage Wines and Bistro in Canal Winchester. After you’ve eaten your fill, you should visit the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and catch a Clipper’s game downtown at the Arena District.
I think you should go to Banff, Alberta Canada. It’s sooo beautiful there, and you can marvel and the wonder of the mountains and maybe even see the Northern Lights. I would fly to Calgary Alberta and then drive from there. And once you’re there, the things to to outside abound!
I think you should go to Italy. You can eat and drink your way through a beauitiful country.
Fly to San Diego, CA… Once you’re here you can enjoy the miles of beaches. Start at Ocean Beach where you can shop the marvelous antique stores and shell shops, and have lunch at the famous burger shop (and coolest restaurant on the beach) Hodad’s. Don’t forget the San Diego Zoo and all of the great museums in Balboa Park. Have fun whatever you do! 🙂

I would suggest that you come to Boston! I just recently moved here myself and have fallen in love with the city. Fly in and then stay downtown where you can walk everywhere. Go see a Red Sox game while you are here or take in the wonderful Boston Pops orchestra. The history here alone is worth a trip. Walk to streets of downtown for the historic Freedom Trail. There are so many options you would not be bored and anything you do would be a great time!

I say fly to Utah and then roadtrip it to southern Utah for some canyoneering! From Zions Park to Canyonlands to Cedar Mesa to San Rafael Swell there are many unique and off the beaten path areas to explore. Have a guide take you and teach you about the many historic (outlaws!) and archeological (Native Americans!) finds you will see. Then find a bed and breakfast and relax your sore muscles away.

If it’s a weekend getaway, you don’t wan to spend a lot of time traveling. I would also go ahead and take Monday off for recovery purposes.
Saturday: I would hop on an early plane to NYC, check in at one of the hotels conveniently located in Times Square, grab a quick bite to eat and then take a helicopter tour of NYC and see everything from above! For dinner I would go to Ellen’s Stardust Diner – A fun place with singing waiters- and then head to the theater to see “How to Succeed in Business…” After the show I would find a cozy place for dessert.
Sunday morning: Head up to Harlem for the Sunday Morning Gospel Tour/Soul Food Brunch. In the afternoon I would go shopping for purses in Chinatown and then hit some of the unique shops in SoHo. For dinner I would eat at Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto’s restaurant in Chelsea Market and then go see “Billy Elliot” on Broadway. After the show, go back to the hotel and either take the red-eye back home or wait to fly home early Monday morning.

Take the train! Trains are awesome and so much less stressful than flying! I don’t know much about Texas, but you won’t want to be on the train forever… so I recommend going to the coast somewhere. Have a nice relaxing time at the beach! Yay for summer!
If it were me, I would take the kids on a Texas road trip to see all the “world’s largest” roadside attractions your state has to offer, like the world’s largest cowboy boots in San Antonio and the world’s largest pecan in Seguin! Everything’s bigger in Texas, or so I hear!
I think you should visit somewhere that is having a festival, like how Buffalo NY has a buffalo wing festival every year. Definitely go by automobile so you can explore more and of course when you get there, eat!

What should I do when I get there?
you can do the normal museums, zoos, and I think there is an amusement park there.
You should take a plane and go to Old Forge NY. You could enjoy camping in the Adirondacks along with boating and swimming. It’s beautiful there.

Where should I go? San Francisco, CA
Should I travel by train, plane or automobile? I say all the above….read more to see! To get to San Fran – definitely by plane. It would be too grueling of a drive for a weekend getaway.
What should I do when I get there? Alcatraz is a must for kids, the ferry ride over would be fun for them. Take the trolley (train) to Fisherman’s Warf and walk the piers and streets – rainforest cafe, street performers, fresh seafood, giradelli square (YUMMOOO), Then by rental car, you can go to Stinson Beach or Pt. Reyes (this really is a must! so beautiful!), or you could drive to the Jelly Belly Factory for the kids, 6 Flags Vallejo is driveable. If no kids, you could take a wine tour to Napa/Sonoma – you don’t have to be a ‘drinker’ to go. It is just simply amazing and beautiful. We have both the San Francisco Giants and Oakland Athletics for ballgame experiences! Depending on when you come, you may be able to see the Rangers vs. Athletics (since you are from texas!) And I work for the Oakland Athletics in the press box, I could give a press box tour – both adults and kids love it!
Going by train would be awesome, BUT if it’s for a weekend, more practically, you should go by plane. Especially since I think you should head to San Franscisco. That would be a LONG train ride.
Or internationally, you could head to Peru or Paraguay or Brazil. Oh, the possibilities are so endless!
You should take a car to Austin, TX! Once you get there, I suggest you stop by the Lyndon B. Johnson Museum, Schlitterbahn water park (if you have time!), and eat at some of the famous food carts around town. You could also visit Zilker park or take a segway or kayak tour!
Take a plane to St. Augustine, FLA. Stay in one of the gorgeous bed and breakfasts. Take the walking tour of historical sites, lay on the beach with a good book, and dine at the local restaurants!

I’ve lived in Texas my whole life, so anywhere else sounds like a treat! I’d love to go to New York City and see all the iconic places like Central Park, the Empire State Building, etc.
Off the beaten path…huh? Try Charleston. It’s a wonderful city with so much to offer in the way of culture and relaxation. Stay in one of their historic bed and breakfasts. Some have happy hour and cookies in the evenings. Walk the Battery overlooking the water. Visit the aquarium. Come home refreshed. It’s an easy, breezy flight away!
How about an exciting getaway by plane to New York City!
Where should I go? Savannah GA! I’ve been wanting to go there. Or Nashville TN. It’s awesome.
Should I travel by train, plane or automobile? Plane! Definitely.
What should I do when I get there? Well, in Nashville there is so much music and history. You could stay for weeks and not see everything!
I say go to NYC, by plane, and shop/eat/explore! Have fun! 🙂
I say go to Hollywood and star gaze 🙂 Go by plane!
I would say.. travel to Orlando, FL.. by plane… and check out Disney World.

You should go somewhere by automobile. I’m thinking a cool corner of the American southwest. Camping and hiking, back to the Earth.
Go somewhere new.
Travel by car, so you have options
Get lost with your SO and leave the camera and phone at home. (well take the phone for emergencies) But just leave all behind and enjoy each other just for awhile.

You should Fly to Florida and go to Walt Disney World.
You must fly by plane so you don’t waste time and you can get there so much quicker.
You should have breakfast with Mickey and Minnie and all their friends
Fly to NYC of course. Come see a Broadway show, drive out of the city to the Northfork of Long Island to go winery hopping and then come back to the city for a frozen hot chocolate at serendipity. Or just do some shopping downtown and people watch in Central Park all day 🙂
Looking for advice on planning trips to visit National Parks. But then we’d also love to make a trip to Ireland. Plus, I’m wanting to coordinate a Bloggers meet-up at Sisters Quilt Show. Definitely we need help!

I think you should take a trip out to Boulder, Colorado. You can go by car- take a road trip!! It’s a memorable trip through beautiful land! Once there, go hiking and just explore the area. It’s so wonderful there at any time of the year. You’ll love it!
Put together some great tunes for the trip. Be sure to bring the Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid cd by Bob Dylan along for the ride. It’s perfect when you hit Arizona and Colorado.

I say go to San Diego, stay in the Gaslamp quarter…take a trip to the zoo and coronado!
You should fly and come to Ohio and come to the Football Hall of Fame! (Canton, Ohio)
I think a wonderful place to visit is Savannah, Georgia. It is the definition of southern living and hospitality. You can fly there and rent a car if you’d like to travel only 20 miles away to Tybee Island (a beautiful beach on the Atlantic). Otherwise, stay in the downtown area, walk around, take a tour of the historical houses (and find those featured in Midnight In The Garden of Good & Evil), check out all of the amazing antique stores, and eat at delicious southern restaurants. You won’t want to miss Paula Dean’s restaurant either!

I highly suggest a visit to Athens, GA. You can fly into the Atlanta airport or the small one in Athens. Why Athens? It’s known for it’s eclectic music scene (B-52s, REM, Widespread Panic, etc.), is home to the University of Georgia, and has the most amazing restaurants you could ever try. Take in a football game at the UGA stadium to see the Bulldawgs in action. Then, unwind at a delicious dinner at my favorite tapas restaurant, Speakeasy. Their food is seriously unbelievable. Afterwards, check out a concert at the famous Georgia Theatre or the 40 Watt, where many bands have played over the years, some before going on to be major influences in the music world. I remember when Dave Matthews played there and no one knew who he was! Stroll amongst the blooms at the Botanical Gardens and be sure to eat at The Grit, Athens most famous vegetarian eatery, for a lunch to remember. I am not a huge tofu fan, but theirs is delicious. You will love Athens! It’s my hometown and I miss it like crazy. 🙂

Fly into tiny Eureka, CA airport (you’ll need to take a commuter flight). Rent a car in the airport and it’s just a short drive (less than an hour) to the victorian town of Ferndale. The Shaw House Bed & Breakfast is to die for! From there you can walk around the town, visit the amazing gigantic Redwoods- where you can even drive your car through a tree trunk! Visit the amazing Trinidad state beach and see the lighthouse. See elk near the little red school house. A short drive takes you to Southern Oregon, where the coast is a must-see. Enjoy!

Well, since we just got back from the beach, I think you should write a post about flying into Myrtle Beach and discovering places to go and things to do that are unusual and not as cheesy and touristy. It seems like a great deal of the things there are marketed towards tourists, but there are many people who live there year-round, so I know there has to be more we don’t know- delicious restaurants the locals love, beautiful gardens, surrounding less-populated islands to visit, etc. I would love to read something like that!

I really want to take our grandchildren to Disney Land/World, but have no idea where to start. So many webpages have info, but it’s just confusing. I’d love to hear a first-hand account- flying to Orlando/Cali or driving, what hotel you stayed at/why we should/shouldn’t stay there, how to play the trip and what are the must-see things. Plus,, I’m sure it would be fun for you. LOL! Maybe you could even get Disney to give u discounts for a review. 🙂

You have to fly to Kauai, Hawaii, and stay on the southern shore. You can bike around the coast, take a helicopter tour of the Na Pali Coast (unreachable by road), watch amazing sunsets from Poipu Beach, and enjoy perfect weather! It is uncrowded and has gorgeous scenery.

How about a hometown post? Take pics of your hometown, local businesses, beautiful places to visit. Not sure if you live in your hometown, so you may not have to go anywhere at all! It would be fun, local businesses would be excited to promote themselves, and you can show others how great your town is!

You should hop a flight here to Louisville and visit our zoo! We have a new polar bear exhibit they just finished building, and the abandoned polar bear cub they found stranded on an iceburg awhile back is coming to live there, too. After you can visit the Louisville Slugger museum (you get a free bat at the end of the tour), stop by the Louisville Bats stadium for a minor league game, and then have breakfast at Lynn’s Paradise Cafe (it’s been featured on both the Food Network and the Travel channel).
Thanks,
