The String Bean in Richardson.
The String Bean is a restaurant serving home-style American food and has an entire kids’ room with toys, bean bags, and a television playing kids’ shows! It’s right next to the main dining area, and there is a doorway but no door, so you can always see the kids. It’s the perfect solution when they get a little crazy sitting at the table, but not everyone is finished eating yet (or hasn’t started).
The food at The String Bean includes dishes like pot roast and “Quiche of the Day”, but also more healthy choices like steamed cod and sandwiches and salads for lunch or dinner. They have daily special dishes that change weekly, like one of my past favorites: grits and grilled shrimp skewers. It might sound weird, but it was delicious! As a semi-vegetarian, my favorite meal is Vegetable Plate which is a combination of any 4 side dishes. I just pick ones without meat and I always include fried okra. Not exactly the healthiest because it is fried, but one of my favorite comfort foods! Other side dishes include mashed potatoes, string beans (of course!), corn, mac and cheese, fries, and several other veggies varying by season.
I also enjoy the staff at The String Bean – they feel a lot like family and are very understanding of kids’ dining needs. There is a kids’ menu as well, with the typical coloring page and crayons provided. Don’t be surprised if your kids leave the colors untouched and run for the toys instead.
The String Bean also has a small bar serving wine and beer in a more “adult” room with sports on the television. I wouldn’t know much about that, though, because we never sit far from the kids’ room!
We consider this little restaurant one of Richardson’s secret treasures! Visit next time you’re in our city, and don’t forget to end your meal with the “cobbler of the day”.
Do you ever get a craving for someone to cook delicious comfort food for you while the kids play quietly and safely in the next room? My husband and I found a magical place with exactly that:
