Make Rock Creatures for some rainy day fun with the kids! This is such a creative and fun craft to do with kids on a rainy, cold or otherwise not-good-for-playing-outside day. This is also a great birthday party activity for kids. If you’re like most moms, then you probably already have the supplies on hand in your craft bin to make rock creatures or pet rocks with the kids.
Here’s 10 Family Activities for a Rainy Day to further inspire you and bust kid boredom.
These were originally going to be bugs, but we decided to make rock creatures instead. Basically, my daughter began naming them after her pretend friends. At least her pretend friends now have “faces.” Get creative and you can have fun creating pet rocks, pretend rock friends or paperweight bugs. Here’s what you need to Make Rock Creatures:
Make Rock Creatures
- Old toothbrush to clean the rocks
- Craft paint (acrylic is best)
- Embellishments such as pom-poms, googly eyes, feathers, etc)
- Hot glue gun and hot glue sticks
First, scrub the dirt off the rocks with an old toothbrush and allow the rocks to dry completely (use a hairdryer for faster drying time).
Next, paint the rocks. We used yellow, blue, and orange. You may need two coats of paint and you’ll want to cover your crafting area with newspaper or plastic to protect your working area since acrylic paint does not come out easily. Afterwards, you could also add a layer of glow-in-the-dark paint once the acrylic paint dries.
Third, using the hot glue gun and hot glue sticks adhere googly eyes, pom-poms, feathers or any other embellishments to your rock creatures. Young kids will need an older child or adult to help them with this step.
Finally, display your rock creatures for all to see!
(Cat approved, HA!!)
Kids can put them on a nightstand, a bookshelf or even exchange them between friends. Let your kids show off what they created and they’ll not only feel proud of themselves, but it will also encourage their creativity.
