Our mission is to reconnect mankind with nature with our “hands on” teaching of ancient Native American skills of nature awareness and primitive wilderness survival. The Camp Tonkawa property is a certified wildlife refuge. Our woods of oak and junipers have plenty of trails, a small creek, fishing pond, swimming pond, pasture, organic garden, barn and a long house. Western Days Spring Camp – Monday, March 12th (10am) through Wednesday, March 14th (3pm) and Wednesday 21st through Friday the 23rd. Costs: $250/$100 Deposit will secure your spot. Includes all meals. Length of Time: 3 FULL days, 2 nights. Class Description – This camp was designed for the younger horse lover, aged 9 to 13 years. Come play “Cowboys and Indians” with us, Camp Tonkawa style! A three day camp will have half a day with horses: controlled riding sessions, grooming, feeding, a trail ride. Also will include archery, canoeing, a scavenger hunt, games and crafts. Sleep in Indian Tipis, eat Dutch oven cooking, and just have a rodeo of fun. We have a swimming pond, so bring provisions to enjoy. NOTE : All classes have a minimum number of registrants to make or sorry to say it will be cancelled. Trot Horsemanship Day Camp – March 15th 2012. Costs: $75. Length of Time: 10am – 3pm. A fun filled day for you “Horse Lovers”. Cpme improve your riding skills with fun activities. Prerequisite is the Basic Horsemanship Day Camp and pre-approval by our staff. We hope you’ll remember what we taught you and can now practice it all. This will include the haltering, leading, grooming, tacking up and then riding. Followed by the cooling out and feeding. We’ll start with an introductory ride working on proper posture, cueing and gaits. A horse Obstacle Course will be used to make it interesting and to measure your progress. Then we’ll hit the road for a Trail Ride. Bring your own lunch. Space is limited since each person will need their own horse for the day, so register early. Extra classes can be scheduled if need. Class limit 6-8. Age 10 years old and up. FYI : Camp Tonkawa DOES have some various size helmets, or bring your own. Medical Release Waivers are required – NO EXCEPTIONS.
Spring Nature Camp – Sunday, March 13th (10am) through Tuesday, March 15th (3pm). Costs: $180/$100 Deposit will secure your spot. Includes all meals. Length of Time: 3 FULL days, 2 nights. Three days of FUN in the woods, for your 7-13 year olds. Learn about the plants and wildlife in our area through fun games and nature awareness activities. Your will also be taught basic camping skills, canoeing, archery, songs, games and crafts. What a fun way to reconnect with nature during the springtime of year. Younger children can have parents accompany them, arrangements must be made on individual basis. Teach them to love nature at an early age is a special gift they have throughout their lives, that will benefit not only them but our earth.
Primitive Skills Survival Class 1 and 2 Combo – March 16th-18th. Costs:$150 for adults 16yrs up, $120 for 12-15yrs, $100 for 8-11yrs with adult. Length of Time: Begins at 9:30am on the first day and goes through 2:30pm on the last day. 3 FULL days 2 nights. At any time, anywhere, things can go wrong and you might find yourself in a survival situation. You can survive 3 minutes without oxygen, 3 hours without shelter in extreme conditions, 3 days without water, and 3 weeks without food. To stay alive, you must find or build a shelter, obtain “safe” drinking water, start a fire and gather food. Survival 1 class will teach you how to build a simple shelter using natural materials, start a fire without matches, and find safe drinking water. Nature’s Supermarket is always open with a buffet of choices. Learning to gather and prepare wild edibles throughout the seasons is an exciting adventure, that includes both plant materials and animals. Then knowing how to prepare them into palatable meals is the next important step. Survival 2 class covers the three aspects of Wild Edible Plants, Wild Meats, and Primitive Cooking. Together you have the whole “Shelter, Water, Fire, Food” bases covered for complete survival. Outdoor solar showers will be available. We have a swimming pond, so bring provisions to enjoy. Monday, March 12: OWL PROWL – Discover owls “ the giants of the night sky. Feel an owl feather and take a close look at owl talons, skulls and study skins. Wednesday, March 14: HERONS & EGRETS – Wade into the fun with an exciting day on the water. We ™ll explore the pond with the graceful herons and egrets and use kayaks and canoes to get a bird's-eye view of the water. We ™ll sneak out to the bird blind and watch these birds hunt and fish for frogs, crawfish and snakes and we ™ll meet some of their favorite foods up close. We ™ll even try fishing the heron way! Thursday, March 15: BIRDS IN THE ˜HOOD (CITY BIRDS) -Discover the amazing birds that share our urban home. Feel feathers, taste an edible insect, make a bird feeder for home, and learn to use binoculars and field guides. Try out a spotting scope. Learn to identify 10 common birds by sight and sound and make a nature journal to record what you see. Hold a homing pigeon and set it free to watch it navigate home. Friday, March 16: HAWKS & FALCONS – Fly high with hawks and falcons! We ™ll set out on an expedition to find them with binoculars and spotting scopes and learn to tell hawk from falcon and vulture. We ™ll learn to make hawk calls and identify them by ear. We ™ll meet a live bird of prey up close and study its powerful beak and talons to learn how it hunts. Together, we ™ll build kestrel nest boxes to help with our kestrel conservation monitoring project. *Campers bring sack lunch; snacks are provided.

Chameleon Color Wheel – Learn about primary and secondary colors by creating a chameleon with watercolor that changes color. It is a fun and exciting way to learn how to mix colors. For Age: 4-6 or 7-12, Mon, 03/12/2012 from 9:00 – 12:00. Cost $40.
Tie Dye Tee Shirt – The art of Tie-dyeing process involves a blend of chemistry, and artistic placement of color. When successfully merged, this combination results in intricate images of brilliant and durable color – a reflection of the artist’s imagination. Dyes form strong molecular bond to the fiber and last the life of the fabric. In comparison, things like screen prints, transfers and fabric paints are all far less durable than dyes since they merely stick to the surface of the fabric until they shrink, crack and peel away from being washed and worn. Capricorn Equestrian Center– 6101 Ben Road Sachse, TX 75048. Camps are 9:00 am “ 5:00 pm for ages 6-14. Cost is $65 per day or $275 for the week. Campers are divided into groups according to riding experience, comfort level, or age. Groups are then taught safety around horses, how to saddle and bridle, and are matched to a horse with the camper's needs in mind. Every day features two one-hour lessons on horseback. In addition to riding, campers will learn about taking care of horses by helping with traditional barn chores like feeding, watering, and grooming horses as well as cleaning the barn area. Other activities during the week include outside games, arts and crafts, games on horseback, and horse costume/grooming contests. On Friday, Capricorn hosts a camper horse show for family and friends to attend. Capricorn provides the horses, tack, and helmets*. Our facility also includes an air-conditioned lunchroom and refrigerators for campers to use. Remember, most of the day will be spent outside, so take that into account when preparing your child for each day of camp. Chameleon Color Wheel – Learn about primary and secondary colors by creating a chameleon with watercolor that changes color. It is a fun and exciting way to learn how to mix colors. For Age: 4-6 or 7-12, Mon, 03/12/2012 from 9:00 – 12:00. Cost $40.
Tie Dye Tee Shirt – The art of Tie-dyeing process involves a blend of chemistry, and artistic placement of color. When successfully merged, this combination results in intricate images of brilliant and durable color – a reflection of the artist’s imagination. Dyes form strong molecular bond to the fiber and last the life of the fabric. In comparison, things like screen prints, transfers and fabric paints are all far less durable than dyes since they merely stick to the surface of the fabric until they shrink, crack and peel away from being washed and worn.
