One fun fact is how the U.S. State of Maryland got its name. The name was to honor Queen Henrietta Maria, wife of King Charles I, King of Great Britain and Ireland, who signed the 1632 charter establishing the colony of Maryland.
Also nicknamed the “free state,” Maryland has a rich history in North America. It was the seventh state to be ratified into the United States and has the oldest state capitol in continuous legislative use. Let’s learn some more facts!

- The state’s nickname, the “Old Line State,” comes from its soldiers’ legendary bravery during the Revolutionary War. They were called the Maryland Line.
- The Chesapeake Bay, a huge estuary off the Atlantic Ocean, is a famous landmark in Maryland. It’s home to blue crabs, the state’s official crustacean.
- The United States Naval Academy, located in Annapolis, trains future Navy and Marine Corps officers. Annapolis is also the capital of Maryland and home to the Maryland State House.
- Baltimore, the largest city in Maryland, played a significant role in American history. It’s where Francis Scott Key wrote the “Star-Spangled Banner,” which became the national anthem.
- St. Mary’s City was Maryland’s first European settlement in 1634.
- Assateague Island, off the coast of Maryland, is famous for its wild horses that roam the beaches.
- The state’s highest point is Backbone Mountain, reaching over 3,300 feet above sea level.
- Maryland was the birthplace of Babe Ruth, an iconic baseball player for the Baltimore Orioles.
- Baltimore is home to the National Aquarium, where you can see amazing marine life from the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake Bay.
- The University of Maryland, College Park, is ranked #57 in Best Global Universities.
- Harriet Tubman, a famous abolitionist, was born in Maryland and played a significant role in helping enslaved people escape to freedom through the Underground Railroad.
- The state is proud of its historical significance as the location of the first-ever dental school in the United States, which opened in Baltimore in 1840.
