The oatmeal makes them feel full, the dried fruit makes my fruit-loving little man happy and the flaxseed adds brain-friendly fats. These granola bars will keep for a week or so, but for a longer shelf-life, freeze them!

Ingredients to make Kid-Friendly Homemade Granola Bars

  • 2 cups rolled oats (grind 1 cup in the blender or food processor for more consistent texture)
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup wheat germ
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup vegetable/canola oil
  • 1/2 cup honey and/or maple syrup
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter (optional)

  • also optional: 1 tsp cinnamon and 1/2 tsp nutmeg

directions to make Kid-Friendly Homemade Granola Bars

Step 1

Mix everything together very well and spread in a greased 9×13 pan.

Step 2

Bake at 350 for just 15-18 minutes. Even though this doesn’t seem long enough, they’ll be chewy & perfect.

Step 3

Allow to cool down before cutting it into pieces. I always freeze half the pan right away so they’re fresh even if it takes more than a few days to eat them.

Yield: 1 9x13 inches pan

  1. These look good….I always tend to shy away from recipes for them that have oil in them and wonder if you have ever made them without?
I have a favorite recipe that doesn’t have any fat in them, but is high in sugar….both honey and brown sugar, and so went looking for another recipe, even though I love it and it is better than store bought!! Anything homemade is better than store!

  2. I seem to be the first person on here who actually MADE the recipe before posting anything! I have just finished making these and after cooling, gave them a try. They totally fell apart! My kids were not that thrilled either with the flavour, and we’re a very healthy home! Just wanted to try something new, since granola bars on not a regular in our home due to all the bad stuff in them. So, I followed the recipe to a “t” and we were just not satisfied. I put the ingredients into the SparkRecipe calculator and found it to have way more calories per serving than store bought bars, and more sugar content/carbohydrates. Only these things are at least made up from “healthy” ingredients. Not sure I believe this…Honey, brown sugar, peant butter, and oil don’t belong in any healthy diet on a regular basis. At least no chemicals etc found on commercial bars. Will keep looking when it comes to healthier eating. I guess we’ll eat it as granola cereal, or just scrap the mess. Sorry, not all it was shown to be.

    1. Sorry they did not work for you… it is a recipe we have used and enjoy as a family. Yes, they do crumble more than store-bought granola bars, but we still enjoy them 🙂

  3. Kid friendly? Everyone friendly! Seriously, this recipe is great for people looking to snack on something healthy during the day and as part of an overall nutrition/ diet shakeup.

  4. mmmmmm……. it really look yummy. I’m pretty sure my son will surely love this Granula bar. Definitely I’ll visit again for more yummy food. Thanks for sharing. Minisite Design

  5. Thanks for this amazing recipe. My kids like granola bars (I do too) but the ingredients in the store bought ones are appalling – so much stuff we shouldn’t be putting in our bodies.

This one has good, wholesome ingredients and they taste good too!
