When I think of whales my mind wanders back to my days serving as a flight surgeon in the Army, when I was so lucky to be stationed in Hawaii!
The coolest thing about being a flight surgeon is that we got to fly in the helicopters, often in a front seat. My very first ride in Hawaii was on a Coast Guard helicopter – the little fast-moving orange ones you may have seen flying over the beach.
The pilots took us from Oahu to the far side of Molokai then turned around to head back. On the way back, they flew nap-of-the-earth, which means they were flying right above the treetops, swooping up and down over the steep mountain ridges.
Just like a roller coaster, when they swooped up one side all we could see was sky, then we would tip over and zoom down into the next tree-covered valley. Up and down until finally we swooped up, then as we reached the top there was nothing in front of us but bright blue ocean and the beach down below.
We swooped down towards the beach and just as we leveled out – a humpback whale breached, leaping out of the water and falling back with a tremendous splash! It is one of my favorite experiences of all time.
