Give your bread a twist
My daughters love to customize their bread and make their own variations on an ordinary loaf. We often set up a baking station on the kitchen table with extra ingredients for them to mix in to the dough to make sweet and savory versions. You could try raisins, candied cherries, ground cinnamon, dried thyme and oregano. They also like to use cookie cutters to make their bread into different shapes and sometimes make letters with the dough too.

The recipe was a bit misleading. I’ve hand-made bread before, with good results. I skipped the water/yeast dissolved mixture because I was interested to see the result of simply combining the ingredients as directed. The results were not great. The yeast must be activated by the warm water or the bread will not rise. You cannot simply pour the yeast in a bowl and combine everything together. And kneading the sticky mixture without first sprinkling hands and counter with flour was not pleasant. I scraped the mixture off my daughter’s hands, then proceeded with the kneading with flour. The round ball never increased in size, despite following the instructions in the recipe. The birds received a welcome dinner of bread crumbs from our baked loaf. It was too hard for us to eat.
I think the simplicity of the recipe is deceiving. It should include the important steps needed to actually produce the bread in the picture.
I am so sorry that was your experience. I use that recipe regularly and have NEVER dissolved the yeast in warm water. I just add it all together including the butter that isn’t room temperature and it has worked great for me. I use a bread machine which may be the difference in our experience. I seriously have made this recipe probably close to 150 times! It is a family favorite.
Is it possible that the sugar was omitted in the recipe? I can’t imagine yeast working without sugar?
