As you know I have three boys.

Each boy gets an allowance.

3 x 1 = 3

I want each boy to learn how to:

  • save
  • give to charity
  • spend responsibly

3 x 3 = 9

A year or two ago I was really excited to find a jar for allowances which separated money into three different parts.

I bought three.

3 x 1 = 3

That worked for us for awhile until I noticed that the jars were filling up with IOUs…from me.

And sometimes they weren’t actual paper IOUs, but ones that remained in my head because I hadn’t gotten around to doling out the weekly allowances.

3 x 7 + 2 or was it 3? – 6 or was it 2? x 17 or did I miss a week? = I don’t know!

Suddenly I was doing advanced allowance math in my head!

ARRRRRRGH!

My basic problem was three-fold:

  • I get cash from the ATM in $20 bill increments.
  • I easily forget to do something weekly.
  • The boys would ask how much money they had when we were at the store.

This system is not working for me!

But then I found a solution.  One that changed drastically the way we handle allowance and chore money in my house!
